England need 'resilient cricketers' in overseas conditions, says Graham Thorpe

‘We’re still a developing side’ claims batting coach after England toil to draw in Hamilton

England batting coach, Graham Thorpe, has urged those players in the Test set-up to keep focusing on how to improve their games as Chris Silverwood and Joe Root seek to build a team that can challenge to win back the Ashes in Australia.A rain-affected draw in Hamilton extended England’s poor away record under the captaincy of Root – they have won just four times in 15 overseas Tests since he took over in 2017. But pointing to the inexperienced nature of the squad in New Zealand, Thorpe suggested there was plenty of scope for England to improve their performances in unfamiliar conditions, saying they would need “resilient cricketers” for the Australia tour of 2021-22.ALSO READ: England must raise fielding standards to help toiling bowlers to catch a breakThe bowlers, in particular, faced some hard yards in Mount Maunganui and Hamilton. Sam Curran was England’s leading wicket-taker, with six at 39.66, while Jofra Archer, on his first overseas assignment, finished with two at 104.50. The decision to go into the second Test with a five-man pace attack also came under scrutiny, particularly after New Zealand batted their way to safety at 241 for 2 on the fifth day at Seddon Park.”We’re still very much a developing team from a coaching point of view, we’re trying to identify those characters who can take us forward,” Thorpe said. “Jofra’s had a new experience; abroad, never been to New Zealand, first time he’s bowled with a Kookaburra ball, it’s a learning curve for him. As with more games under Sam Curran, the variety of our attack, what have we got? Have we got different performers which we can use abroad?”Even playing without a spinner in this game, people might criticise it but you’ve also got to look at what you’ve got as well. Can you play differently from time to time? We’ve got to keep developing our players, no doubt about that. They have to ask themselves when they come away from a trip like this: where can I get better? Because the big picture is down the line in a couple of years’ time, we’ll need resilient cricketers going to Australia.”

England’s record with the Kookaburra ball remains a source of concern. Over the last four years, English seamers average almost 10 runs per wicket more in countries where the Kookaburra is used (Australia, Bangladesh, New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka and the UAE), although their next assignment, in South Africa, may feature surfaces friendlier to pace bowling.Thorpe highlighted the example of Neil Wagner, New Zealand’s Man of the Series and an expert at creating openings with short-pitched bowling, as something for England to keep in mind as they seek a sharper edge on their travels.”Generally you’ve got a few plans as bowlers,” Thorpe said. “When guys first go to the crease, they’re vulnerable for a period of time and you need bowlers who can carry out different strategies at different times throughout the course of a Test match. Maybe it’s some different angles, some different styles of bowling. Wagner bowls in a certain way, [Ben] Stokes tried that, and it was against two good batsmen, and all of a sudden they can become a little ruffled in the way they play. That’s a style.”How much can we do with the ball? We’ve got to work very, very hard to go off-straight as well, so taking care of the ball. South Africa has slightly different surfaces, a little bit more carry so again our players have got to look ahead.”There have been some challenges, players might say they’ve been flat pitches but we know that on flat pitches there is pressure on batters to make sure they put big runs on the board and then there’s pressure on bowlers to make sure they find a way of having sometimes three tactical ways of getting batsmen out: one when they’re first in, one when they’re set and another one in terms of what can we do with the ball? Maybe to be able to get some movement with that Kookaburra ball. There’s plenty in the mix.”One obvious positive for England was in the performance of their captain at Seddon Park, as Root recorded his first hundred in 15 innings and highest score overseas.”It’s great to see Root come back and scoring some runs and how he is in the dressing room as well, that’s great for his confidence. He was already held in very esteem in the dressing room, so he’s just confirmed that and also that he’s a world-class player as well. Everyone goes through little dips in their career so it’s great to see him back up and running with the bat.”

Lee Dixon raves over Arsenal star who’s "very unique" to Arteta

Let's cast our minds back to the conclusion of the summer transfer window last year. Arsenal had just spent a seismic sum of money, notably to bring Declan Rice to the Emirates Stadium.

For a brief moment, Rice became a British record transfer, signing on for a grand total of £105m. Also welcomed with open arms to north London was £65m Kai Havertz and David Raya on loan. Jurrien Timber arrived too, captured for £38m.

However, besides the ever-impressive Rice, Arsenal's summer signings suddenly looked like poor business after the opening months of the campaign.

Arsenal players Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice

Timber sustained a devastating ACL injury on the opening weekend of the Premier League season and hasn't been seen since. Raya's first few weeks after replacing Aaron Ramsdale looked nervy and it took until November for Havertz to find a goal from open play.

Yet, as has often been the case since he became Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta got it right.

Raya has stood out the more he plays and was the penalty hero in the Champions League against Porto while Havertz's fortunes have changed considerably.

Kai Havertz's season in numbers

£65m on Havertz, you say? Yeah, it's a pretty outrageous sum of money for a player who struggled to stand out for the right reasons at Chelsea.

There was that famous night when he scored the winning goal in the Champions League final but beyond that the German never really got going, scoring just 32 goals across 139 appearances for the Blues.

A move was required and Arsenal came calling. However, the opening few months were riddled with criticism. His only goal for the Gunners across the first 12 league outings was a penalty against Bournemouth.

Fortunately, he's now revived his fortunes and become one of the most important members of Arteta's side.

2024 has been the year of Havertz who has scored in each of his last four league matches, also providing two assists in that time. The £280k-per-week man – who takes home the highest salary of any Arsenal player – is emphatically proving his doubters wrong.

He's impressed many, including former Arsenal defender Lee Dixon who has been delighted with his recent appearances in the red and white.

What Lee Dixon has said about Kai Havertz

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast on behalf of BetVictor Casino Dixon swooned over the 24-year-old's displays in recent times, admitting that while he always believed there was a player in there at Chelsea, he was initially on the fence about his move across London.

"Firstly, yeah, he's done really well," Dixon began. "I was one of those – and it's easy to say after the event – but I was one of those who sat on the fence and said, ‘look let's give him a little chance’. You know, people will go ’why have you spent that money on him? He's rubbish.’

"Some of the commentators and people were set on their opinion and that's absolutely what they should do if that's what they believe, but I just thought, we've all seen stuff in him when he was at Chelsea and there is a player in there, it's just a case of finding a home and it looks like he's really comfortable now."

"I think when you've got a player who seems to be a confidence player – not everybody is – but we all like to play with confidence in the place where we think nothing's going to go wrong. Some players can play through that and he looks like that player."

Havertz has played in a number of roles since signing for Arsenal. Arteta initially thought the German could act as a replacement for Granit Xhaka in the no.8 role but his best displays have actually come as a false 9.

With Gabriel Jesus injured and Eddie Nketiah not preferred, the former Chelsea man has been entrusted as the focal point of the attack and delivered some truly impressive displays.

That's thanks to what Dixon thinks is an incredibly 'unique' profile. Discussing Havertz's best qualities and play style, the former England international commented: "He's showing that he feels at home and the positions that he's taken up and his ability to be dangerous around the box gives Arsenal just a little bit of an extra dynamic."

"So, instead of players looking at him going ‘oh, Kai Havertz? He's not going to cause much trouble’, now all of a sudden he is a problem. He changes how teams play against you. He’s got a very unique style to his play in that he is quite languid at times. And then other times he’s really athletic. So he's quite different to a lot of players that Arsenal have which is a good thing."

So, the mega-money signing has turned his career around at just the right time. Arsenal face a massive test in the title race when they face Manchester City on Sunday. They then have to take on Bayern Munich in the Champions League. If they are to come through those ties with victories in hand, they will need Havertz at his best.

Qais Ahmad's magical spell spins Hobart Hurricanes to victory

Riley Meredith also played a vital role in defending a small total on a slow pitch in extremely hot conditions in Alice Springs

Afghanistan’s Qais Ahmad delivered a magical spell of wrist spin to sink the Sydney Sixers on an enervating day in Alice Springs and hand the Hobart Hurricanes an opening victory in the BBL.The Sixers had appeared well placed to run down the Hurricanes’ mediocre 9 for 129, but their innings followed a similar pattern to that of Hobart as a strong start was squandered in increasingly difficult batting conditions. Ahmad’s brilliance, including three wickets in four balls in his second over, was ably supported by the speed of Riley Meredith and a pair of vital wickets to Simon Milenko.D’Arcy Short had given the Hurricanes a decent platform after Ben McDermott won the toss and chose to bat, only to see Ben Manenti, Sean Abbott and Ben Dwarshuis combine usefully for the Sixers. They had seemed happy with their looming chase, but reckoned without Ahmad, who already looks to be one of the most watchable figures in the BBL this season.Short’s stay at the creaseOn a slow, dry Traeger Park surface in temperatures above 40C, Short made the most of the early overs when the new ball was hard and provided value for shots despite a somewhat spongy outfield. When timing the ball sweetly, Short’s languid follow through can recall some of golf’s more elegant shotmakers, and this innings offered similar aesthetic pleasures to spectators and television viewers. The Hurricanes captain McDermott was content to give Short the strike while pushing the ball around and not finding the boundary, and at 1 for 44 after the powerplay and then 1 for 76 in the 11th over there was a more than decent platform. However, the off-breaks of Mantenti accounted for McDermott and then Short in the space of eight runs, opening things up for the Sixers seam bowlers.Abbott goes to workTaking the ball in the middle overs, Abbott and Dwarshuis continued to clamp down on the scoring rate as wickets began to fall more regularly against the softening ball and slowing pitch. Dwarshuis enjoyed the notable double of David Miller and the Australian selector-in-waiting George Bailey, while Abbott pinned James Faulkner lbw in a rare straightforward lbw so far for the domestic season. Both pacemen changed their pace and banged the ball into a slowish surface to good constricting effect.Tom Curran came back for the closing overs as the innings tightened still further for the Hurricanes, and the only boundary in the final five overs came from the bat of Ahmad, who hoisted a straightish delivery to within a couple centimetres of going for six.Vince, Philippe clear the ropesJames Vince and Josh Philippe had no such concerns early on, and there was something very similar to how Short started the afternoon in the way the Sixers skated away to 37 from the first four overs. A couple of inside out sixes over cover from Vince off Clive Rose bore the aristocratic style that has made him a part of the England set-up for a number of years, while Philippe looked in tune to follow-up his dismantling of the Perth Scorchers at the SCG on Wednesday night. However, after Ahmad’s early direct hit from mid-on had accounted for Daniel Hughes, neither Vince nor Philippe were able to carry on from this promising start. The combination of high pace and artful wrist spin was to provide a bewitching passage of play for the Hurricanes.Meredith turns momentum, Ahmad turns the screwIt started when Meredith’s entry to the attack brought the first plays and misses and miscues of the innings, as he swiftly pushed the speed gun beyond 145kph. His second over brought an off-cutter change-up and a miscalculation by Vince, who was through the shot too early and bowled. Ahmad’s introduction brought another key wicket when Moises Henriques’ big drive found a lurking Short, and after Milenko struck twice in an over when he replaced Meredith, Qais proceeded to put on a wrist spinner’s clinic after the strategic timeout.First ball, Curran was beaten completely by a sharp leg break that pitched on leg stump before zipping back to hit the top of off, bringing out Ahmad’s ebullient front flip celebration. Next ball Sean Abbott was drawn out of his crease by another leg break and alertly stumped by McDermott, and after Dwarshuis averted the hat-track, Qais moved around the wicket and spun a third perfect leggie through a very large gate between bat and pad. That spell was more or less that, even though Jordan Silk and Mantenti tried in vain to salvage something from the last two wickets.

Here is a detailed look at Brazil’s top goalscorers:

10 Ademir 32 goals (39 caps)

Ademir, full name Ademir Marques de Menezes, represented Brazil between 1945 and 1953. He initially began his career as a winger but moved into a striker.

The former forward scored 13 of his 32 goals in the Copa America, with 1950 being the best year of his career after he found the back of the net 14 times in nine appearances.

9 Ronaldinho 33 goals (97 caps)

Known for his skills, tricks and dribbling ability, Ronaldinho also averaged a goal every three caps for Brazil during his 15-year international stint. One of his most famous goals came at the 2002 World Cup when he lobbed England goalkeeper David Seaman, with the attacking midfielder’s final goal coming in 2011.

Ronaldinho remains the only player to win a World Cup, a Copa America, a Confederations Cup, a Champions League, a Copa Libertadores and a Ballon d’Or.

8 Jairzinho 35 goals (82 caps)

A Botafogo icon at club level, Jairzinho is also regarded as a legend for Brazil. The versatile forward could play anywhere in the final third and played a key role in helping Brazil win the 1970 World Cup.

He was the second-highest scorer in the competition and made the team of the tournament, while also being named in the World XI in 1971 and 1972. Jairzinho’s 34th and 35th goals for Selecao came at the 1974 World Cup before he retired.

7 Rivaldo 35 goals (76 caps)

Rivaldo represented some of the biggest clubs in Europe in Barcelona and AC Milan, while at the same time, impressing for his country in what turned out to be an 11-year international career.

The left-footed forward starred for Brazil in 1999, the year he won the Ballon d’Or. He helped his country defend their Copa America title, ending the competition as top scorer and player of the tournament. Rivaldo retired from international football in 2003 at the age of 31.

6 Bebeto 40 goals (77 caps)

At club level, Bebeto made more appearances for Deportivo La Coruna than any other side. Bebeto made his debut for Brazil in 1985 and his last appearance came in 1998, but it was in 1989 that he made his mark on the international stage.

He scored a quarter of his 40 goals during that calendar year as he helped Brazil win the Copa America, and also won the World Cup in 1994.

5 Zico 48 goals (71 caps)

Attacking midfielder Zico followed in the footsteps of Pele to become Brazil’s main creative outlet between 1976 and 1986, however, he never managed to lift a World Cup or Copa America title.

Regarded as one of Brazil’s best, Zico played in a number of attacking roles for his country and ended with an impressive goal record before retiring from international football eight years prior to the end of his club career.

4 Romario 55 goals (71 caps)

A prolific striker who scored more than 700 goals during his career in just over 1,000 games, it is no surprise to see Romario on this list, with the forward scoring 55 goals in 71 appearances.

A World Cup winner, Romario also represented his country at the Olympic Games and was one of Brazil’s biggest stars during the 1990s. His last appearance for his country was a celebratory match in 2005 at the age of 39.

3 Ronaldo 62 goals (99 caps)

Known by many now as R9, Ronaldo is regarded by many as the best centre-forward in football history. With pace, power and a clinical finisher, he terrorised defences in his prime, though he did suffer from injuries towards the end of his career.

During the early stages of his international career, Ronaldo struck up a brilliant partnership with Romario and enjoyed plenty of success for club and country, while also picking up two Ballon d’Or awards. For Brazil, Ronaldo played between 1994 and 2011, winning two World Cups, two Copa Americas and one Confederations Cup.

2 Pele 77 goals (92 caps)

Pele, regarded as one of the greatest players of all time, held the record as Brazil’s top scorer for more than 50 years. He made his debut for Selecao at the age of 16, scoring against Argentina at the Maracana, and didn’t look back.

In total, the forward scored an obscene total of 1,279 goals in 1,363 games, including friendlies. On the international stage, he averaged at least a goal a game in six separate calendar years. He won the 1958, 1962 and 1970 World Cups, with his final appearance for Brazil coming in 1971.

1 Neymar 79 goals (128 caps)

Some may have thought that Pele’s record would never be broken, however, Neymar managed to do that in September 2023, scoring his 78th and 79th goals for Brazil against Bolivia.

He began his international career at the age of 18 in 2010, scoring on his debut after coming through the ranks at Santos. Since then, he has gone on to star at club level for Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, continuing to be Brazil’s main man.

Unfortunately, Neymar has yet to win a World Cup or Copa America with Brazil, however, the 32-year-old may have his eyes on reaching 100 goals for his country before he retires.

– A semana inicia bem, a gente sempre quer vencer. Na lateral estou me sentindo bem e onde me botarem para jogar eu estou jogando – afirmou.

– Estou me sentindo bem na lateral, estou ‘firmasso’.

+ Ronald supera adaptação e vira boa arma ofensiva do Botafogo

Ele é do bem – colocou.

A jogada do gol do Chay começa comigo, roubamos a bola, o Oyama toca para o Ronald, ele me dá a bola e eu cruzo.O melhor jeito é a correria.

Australia lose Josh Hazlewood for rest of first Test

A hamstring strain means the quick bowler faces a period on the sidelines

Josh Hazlewood won’t bowl again in the first Test against New Zealand after suffering a hamstring strain two balls into his second over and faces a race to play any more Tests this season.*”Overnight MRI [scans] confirmed a left hamstring strain,” a CA spokesman said. “He will not bowl for the remainder of this test, may bat if required. Recovery to be monitored in coming weeks.”Hazlewood had looked distraught as he made his way off after aborting his run-up and Australia will now have to push for victory with just two frontline quicks in Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins. The selectors will need to decide between James Pattinson and the uncapped Michael Neser as his replacement for the second Test at the MCG.”It’s a little bit sore this morning,” Hazlewood told Fox Cricket. “I obviously knew as soon as I did it there was a tear there. It’s not too bad so we’ll play it by ear over the next couple of weeks. Bowlers know their bodies pretty well these days so we know when something is not quite right. The best thing to do was to come off and get it checked out. The ball was coming out really nicely and I had a couple of hours under lights up my sleeve but yeah, unlucky.”It’s a tight series. It will be tough to get up for the last Test but we’ll see how we go. I haven’t [done a hamstring], no. I must be getting older. It’s something new as a quick so I’ll do a bit of rehab and get back on the park as quick as I can.”Despite losing Hazlewood, Australia gave themselves a headstart in their quest for victory by having New Zealand 5 for 109 at the close after Starc claimed three wickets in his second spell, including the key scalp of Kane Williamson thanks to a brilliant catch at slip by Steven Smith, after he had removed Tom Latham in the opening over of the innings.”It’s never nice seeing anyone go down, especially one of your best mates,” Starc said. “Not sure how the scans have come back, hopefully there’s some positivity out of that. It makes it tough, a bowler down, it certainly was for the Kiwis with Ferguson. The plus side is we have them five-for tonight and hopefully for Josh it’s not too bad. If it is going to keep him out then hopefully it’s not too big a break to get the hammy right.Australia have played the same side in the first three Tests of the season. They enforced the follow-on against Pakistan in Adelaide, which meant a heavy workload for the quicks, but there was a week between the end of that Test and the start in Perth. Hazlewood returned to the Test side for the second match of the Ashes in August after having suffered a stress fracture of the back in January. His injury in Perth came amid a dramatic start to New Zealand’s innings, as they lost both openers inside two overs. Latham was rushed by Starc and got a leading edge back to the bowler, and then the out-of-form Jeet Raval played around a beautiful inswinger from Hazlewood to leave them two down with just one run on the board.Williamson and Ross Taylor managed to lead a recovery but Starc’s return in the closing stages of the day changed the complex of the match as he found Williamson’s edge, had Henry Nicholls caught down the leg side and bowled nightwatchman Neil Wagner first ball.It continued an impressive season for Starc who is once again a lock in the Test team having only played once in the Ashes. He has so far claimed 20 wickets and feels he now has better control in Test cricket than at any time in his career following the early-season work he did with New South Wales bowling coach Andre Adams to make a small adjustment to his delivery stride.”I think it probably is [my best control],” he said. “I think those little technical changes I made at the start of the summer have been a big part of that. I’m finding less can go wrong when I’m more compact and having that ball on my back hip.”There was a big conscious effort to be more economical as a group through the Ashes so taking a little bit out of that, but also the technical changes have helped me not sacrifice any pace but be more consistent. It probably helps play a part in the group for the other guys as well, whereas in the past I’ve perhaps leaked runs at certain stages and the other guys have had to work a little harder. Nice to still be able to bowl but keep the runs at a controlled rate.”With Australia now having a depleted attack for the rest of this Test, those qualities will be needed even more.* 11.50am, Perth, December 14: This story was updated with confirmation of Hazlewood’s injury

Update: None of Rangers’ returning injuries back in time to start vs Celtic

Rangers face their biggest game of the season in the Scottish Premiership this weekend, but a negative injury update has emerged ahead of the trip to Celtic.

Rangers preparing for defining Celtic clash

There are big matches and then there is Sunday's Old Firm derby clash between the Gers and the Hoops. The weekend meeting at Ibrox has the potential to be defining in the Scottish Premiership title race, with victory for either unquestionably putting them in pole position to be crowned champions at the end of the season.

Rangers are one point behind Celtic currently, but they have one game in hand on their rivals and know that a win on Sunday, coupled with a victory in that other match left over, would give them a five-point advantage over their adversaries.

There are injury concerns for the Gers heading into the mouthwatering encounter, however, with the likes of Danilo, Kieran Dowerll and Todd Cantwell out, and doubts surrounding Ross McCausland, Abdallah Sima and Dujon Sterling.

Rangers dealt pre-Celtic injury blow

According to The Scottish Daily Mail's John McGarry [via Ibrox News], McCausland, Sima and Sterling won't be back to start for Rangers this weekend, acting as a blow.

Rangers forward Ross McCausland.

There is the potential for them still to earn minutes against Celtic, which is at least a positive, having returned to the fold at home to Hibernian last weekend. Sterling got the most action under his belt, coming on in the 58th minute at Ibrox, but it was also encouraging to see McCausland and Sima feature for 23 and 10 minutes respectively.

In truth, starting any of the three would feel like a huge risk by Clement, considering Sunday's clash could easily be the most pressurised and intense of the campaign so far. Rangers will need every single player at the top of the game, so starting only fully fit individuals makes complete sense.

Of the three players, it is Sima who could arguably be the biggest positive to see back on the pitch against the Hoops, given his match-winning potential in the final third. He has scored 10 goals in the 15 league matches he has started this season, not to mention netting three times in six Europa League outings.

McCausland remains a young player who lacks experience in fixtures of this magnitude, but he has shown what he is capable of in the past, and possesses a fearlessness that could make him a game-changer from the substitutes' bench on Sunday.

Rangers to make contact over cut-price transfer for £80,000-a-week player

He has seemingly impressed Gers chiefs already this season.

Whatever happens at Ibrox this weekend, Rangers simply must avoid defeat – something they have already experienced home and away against their bitter rivals this season – with even a draw still leaving destiny in their own hands in the title battle. A colossal performance is needed, not just by the starting XI, but also by those who will be thrown on from the bench.
