Glamorgan 300 for 4 (Lloyd 66, Patel 66) v LeicestershireGlamorgan, who may need to win this and their final game of the season against Durham to be in contention for promotion, were on course for a respectable first-innings total against Leicestershire at the end of the first day at Sophia Gardens. They will resume on 300 for 4, after two batsmen scored 66, there were four partnerships of 50 or more and three batting points gained with 19.4 overs left to achieve the maximum.Glamorgan were hoping to bat first on a pitch that played better than it looked and is likely to take spin as the game progresses, but the decision was made for them when Leicestershire opted for an uncontested toss. The visitors also decided to omit Callum Parkinson, their recognised spinner, a decision they may regret, especially as Glamorgan recalled offspinner Andrew Salter for only his second Championship game, in addition to the left-arm spin of Samit Patel.Nick Selman and Kraigg Brathwaite made a quiet start to the innings, before Selman accelerated to strike Ben Mike for four boundaries in the seamer’s fourth over. Mike got his revenge in the following over when Selman was well caught one handed by Will Davis at cover for 36.Brathwaite, who averages 39 in first-class cricket and will be remembered for the 134 and 95 he scored against England for West Indies at Headingley two years ago, continued to play watchfully and was at the crease for 3 hours 40 minutes for his 44 before he was trapped leg before by Gavin Griffiths. After Selman and Brathwaite had put on 62 for the first wicket, the second wicket pair of Brathwaite and David Lloyd continued the good work with their stand of 82. The third half-century partnership followed when Lloyd shared 52 for the third wicket with Patel. Lloyd scored 66 from 148 balls, with a six and eight fours, most of them driven with perfect timing through the off side, before he was bowled by Chris Wright.Patel, playing the third of his four games on loan from Nottinghamshire, equalled Lloyd’s score before spooning the first ball of the 81st over to square leg. Leicestershire, for reasons unknown, did not take the new ball until the 90th over, and a fifth half-century partnership was in sight with Billy Root and Chris Cooke sharing 45 for the fifth wicket. When play ended due to bad light with 5.4 overs remaining Glamorgan would have been satisfied with their day’s work.

FPL bonus points: how they work and this season’s best players

For Fantasy Premier League enthusiasts, having a good weekend in the realm of FPL can be almost as important as their teams getting the results they need in the real world.

Only in FPL can you get joy out of a rival bagging a hat-trick, squeezing in a last-minute assist or even simply staying on the bench to activate an FPL substitute.

Part of the bizarre world of fantasy football is bonus points. But how do they work, and who are the masters of picking them up week in, week out? In this article, we've broken down how it is calculated and who the best performers are this term, as well as shared the greatest bonus-point hauls in FPL history.

All data correct as of 5th March 2024.

How the FPL Bonus Points System works

johan-bakayoko-bukayo-saka-tottenham-opinion

For every Premier League game, the top three players are handed bonus points related to their individual performance. Based on stats from Opta, players can receive up to 3 bonus points on top of their FPL score.

A separate points system is used to rank players for each match, with the top performer earning 3 points, the second-best player getting 2 and the third-best receiving 1. In the event of a tie, multiple players can earn a singular point.

To calculate these points, players are awarded for a variety of performance-related metrics through the Bonus Points System (BPS), including more standard things like scoring goals and keeping clean sheets, as well as more in-depth elements such as having a high pass completion rate and creating big chances.

Players can also lose points for match actions under the BPS like conceding penalties, making errors that lead to goals and being caught offside. Of course, some actions are more valuable (and detrimental) than others, as the table below shows:

Players with the most bonus points in FPL this season (2023/24) Pascal Gross (Brighton & Hove Albion) – 26

Brighton midfielder Pascal Gross has been in exceptional form recently, with the German securing at least 2 bonus points in four of the last five GWs until the Seagulls' recent defeat at Fulham. Nevertheless, his haul leaves him as the league's current bonus points king.

Scoring once and assisting four in that time, he is comfortably Brighton's best performer (at least in FPL terms) at present, having over twice as many BPs as closest challenger Joao Pedro (11).

Douglas Luiz (Aston Villa) – 25

Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz

Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz has collected bonus points galore this term, helped no end by his goalscoring exploits from the middle of the park (and the penalty spot).

Indeed, 25 of his 130 FPL points this season have been bonus ones, picking up 7 in the month of February alone. It almost beggars belief that someone priced at just 5.6 is owned by just 11% of players, particularly when you consider Villa's form in 2023/24.

He holds on to second spot despite drawing a blank in terms of bonuses last weekend, when a teammate of his certainly stole the show…

Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa) – 24

Ollie Watkins continued his superb form this season with another double at Luton Town as Aston Villa snatched a late victory. Grabbing the three-pointer following his latest brace, he overtook Mohamed Salah and Bukayo Saka's bonus points totals. He also stretched his lead as the leading FPL scorer with a total of 183, seven clear of the Arsenal ace. Those bonus points are certainly making a difference.

Players with the most points under the Bonus Points System this season Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa) – 621

Now the leading overall points scorer in FPL this season, there's little surprise over Ollie Watkins raking in the bonus points. Lagging just behind the league's best in that regard with 21, he is certainly doing his best to put himself in the conversation.

Of course, goals massively help the Aston Villa striker's cause, and racking up even more before the season's end will surely see a rise in bonus points as Unai Emery's side chase a Champions League place.

Phil Foden (Man City) – 615

Phil Foden for Manchester City.

He's certainly the man of the moment, and Phil Foden's exceptional form has not gone unnoticed in the bonus points system. He's now taken the maximum of 3 for a second gameweek running, and that's been helped by picking up plenty of points under the BPS. He scored 54 last weekend – a value he has only topped once this season after his hat-trick against Brentford when he posted a pretty insane 73.

Bukayo Saka (Arsenal) – 610

Saka is proving to be more than just Arsenal's main man this year. The 22-year-old has amassed BPS points galore this season, though he has dropped from top spot despite recording two assists in the 6-0 rout of Sheffield United on Monday night.

Indeed, the winger was taken off at half-time as a precaution, with Mikel Arteta claiming he was feeling unwell, and he ended the night with just 23 BPS points. That he only managed 28 the week before when scoring against Newcastle shows what could have been as the Gunners ran riot at Bramall Lane.

Players with the most bonus points in FPL history

According to fantasy football blog ALLABOUTFPL, the most bonus points a player has received in a single season is Cesc Fabregas, who grabbed 54 for Arsenal in the 2006/07 season, although they were calculated in a different way to today's system.

Since FPL's creation in 2002/03, only 11 players have notched as many as 40 bonus points in one campaign. That includes, unsurprisingly, Manchester City's Erling Haaland, and former Spurs supremo Gareth Bale.

Robin van Persie and Harry Kane have the almost-unique distinction of having reached that tally twice, while Eden Hazard is the only other title winner (along with Fabregas, Haaland and Van Persie) to hit 40 BPs.

Steven Smith's masterclass gives Australia series lead

His unbeaten 80 enabled Australia to overcome the loss of David Warner and Aaron Finch to win by seven wickets

The Report by Danyal Rasool05-Nov-2019It didn’t take long for Steven Smith to clamp down on any whispers he might be surplus to the requirements of the Australian T20I side. A commanding half-century that combined pugnacity and poise in exactly the right doses steered Australia to what ended up being a stroll of a chase against Pakistan with victory by seven wickets. It needn’t have been as easy as that, though, and didn’t look nearly as comfortable when they lost David Warner and Aaron Finch inside the powerplay, more than a hundred runs still to get without the comfort blanket of an explosive Glenn Maxwell in the middle order. It was an innings every bit as modern as T20 cricket requires of its players, but the 51-ball 80 Smith struck contained shots that wouldn’t have been out of place at this year’s Ashes. Eleven fours and a six, exactly a half-century of them, came in boundaries, and by the final two overs, Smith was properly peaking. You almost wished Pakistan, who had done quite well at the end of the first innings to post 150, had put up something more challenging than that, if only to watch a little bit more of the game’s hottest player operating at his best.Steven Smith goes after a short ball•Getty Images

He was helped by the belligerence of Australia’s openers, making their intentions plain as early as the second over. Warner took apart Imad Wasim, normally so reliably economical in the powerplay, finding four fours in what seemed like all four corners of the ground to get Australia off to a flyer, before his run of unbeaten scores was ended by Mohammad Amir. Their dismissals within three overs of each other was, in truth, the only time in the whole contest where it felt Pakistan were within a punter’s chance of making a game of it in Canberra’s first T20I, but having added 48 in the powerplay, Smith knew he could take his time to settle in without the asking rate spiralling out of control.Pakistan’s bowling in the phase right after left something to be desired, though, and Smith was given regular opportunities to relieve the pressure, finding four boundaries in the next three overs. That was in stark contrast to the exceptionally frugal efforts of their Australian counterparts, who executed what looked like well thought out plans to each of Pakistan’s batsman.Babar Azam was denied the fuller lengths that allow him to step into those gorgeous cover drives, some of which he unfurled in the early stages before Australia pushed their lengths back, to immaculate success. Haris Sohail was cramped for room with length deliveries that ended with him skying one in the air in a near-replica to the way he was dismissed in Sydney, while an improved Adam Zampa meant Pakistan didn’t have the release in the middle overs so vital to pushing their score up to 170, close to which appeared par on a cracker of a batting surface.Iftikhar Ahmed gave Pakistan a strong finish•Getty Images

The top order, once more, left Azam on his own to fend off the Australia attack. Fakhar Zaman’s tortured existence at the crease lasted seven balls before driving a catch straight to mid-off, while Mohammad Rizwan struggled with the exact problem his predecessor was criticised so heavily for. The dot balls mounted at his end, only increasing the pressure on Azam to keep the runs flowing. It wasn’t until Iftikhar Ahmed came in at No. 6 that Pakistan took Australia’s bowlers to task; until then, the run rate was barely over a run a ball.Exceptional work in the field saw Azam dismissed for exactly 50, underestimating the strength and accuracy of Warner’s throwing arm as he turned for a second, with the throw from deep midwicket smashing into the stumps with the Pakistan captain well short of his ground. It appeared the end for any sort of competitive score, but Ahmed put on a display of brilliant hitting the top order looked utterly incapable of to make his first half-century. Kane Richardson came in for especially heavy punishment in his final over, which leaked 22, as, against all odds, Pakistan posted 150 thanks to Ahmed’s 34-ball 62.Australia had done enough in the first ten to ensure they never required much explosive hitting to get to the target. The odd boundary was all they needed in the second half of their innings, with a player of Smith’s class comfortably capable of providing that. When he wasn’t playing unseemly, albeit mightily effective, ramp shots and tennis forehands, he was piercing gaps in the offside that barely seemed to exist.A tight 16th over from a much improved Shadab Khan – Pakistan’s best bowler by some distance – was the last time things got slightly hairy for the hosts, with 30 needed off four at that point. Half of those would come in the next over, though, with Smith taking Amir apart while displaying the full array of his capability for good measure. From thereon, Australia would ease home without really getting out of third gear. In truth, that could be said about the entire evening in a somewhat forgettable game, lit up only by the shimmering brilliance of a man fit to play international cricket no matter what the format.

Everton struck gold on ace who’s now worth 6x more than Doucoure

In recent times, Everton have had to work on a shoestring budget given their FFP troubles, with most signings either on free transfers or low transfer fees.

The FFP issues have allowed boss Sean Dyche to work closely with his squad, creating a tight-knit group that can fight relegation despite their points deduction this season.

Everton manager Sean Dyche.

Players such as Jarrad Branthwaite and Jordan Pickford have been crucial in the defensive third for the Toffees, with Dyche's side currently boasting the best defensive record of any side outside the Premier League's top four.

The duo have both been named in Gareth Southgate's latest England squad – reflecting their sensational displays for the club so far in what has been a tricky campaign for the club.

However, in the near future, the pair might be joined by a Toffees teammate within the England setup after his impressive season under Dyche.

James Garner's stats at Everton

Since arriving at Goodison Park during the summer of 2022, midfielder James Garner has impressed in multiple different positions under Dyche.

He's often been utilised at right-back and right-midfield before finally cementing his place in the Toffees' midfield alongside Idrissa Gueye, with Abdoulaye Doucoure playing slightly further forward.

Everton midfielder James Garner.

The former Manchester United youngster has made 51 appearances since his switch to Goodison, scoring twice including a stunner in the Carabao Cup tie against Aston Villa at Villa Park.

His stats this season are very impressive, with the former Nottingham Forest loanee averaging 1.6 interceptions per game in the Premier League this season – a figure that ranks him within the top 7% of all midfielders in Europe's top five leagues this season.

Garner also averages 2.6 tackles per 90 this season, with the midfielder demonstrating his ball-winning qualities in the middle of Dyche's side.

The 23-year-old has also excelled in possession for the Toffees, averaging 3.6 progressive passes per game with the midfielder racking up two assists in the Premier League so far this campaign.

James Garner's market value in 2024

Garner joined the club for £9m back in the summer of 2022 from fellow Premier League side Man United, with the midfielder once having a big future at Old Trafford.

Nearly two years on from his arrival in the North West, Garner now has a market value of €30m (£25m), with the 23-year-old currently worth just over six times more than in-form teammate Doucoure, who's value sits at €5m (£4m) – as per CIES Football Observatory.

While at 31, Doucoure's age may be a factor in that minimal market value, the expectation would have been that a player who has netted six league goals this season would be one of the most valuable members of the squad, yet it is Garner who is seemingly on the rise.

The "exceptional" midfielder, as dubbed by former Premier League 'keeper Paul Robinson, has been key to Dyche's side this campaign as they look to avoid relegation to the Championship.

Market Movers

Football FanCast's Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club's star player or biggest flop worth today?

With Garner only being 23, he has a huge future ahead of him at Goodison Park, with the versatile talent for sure in line to receive a senior England call-up in the near future.
