Transfer insider reacts to what he’s hearing about Paulo Dybala and Man Utd

Manchester United are in the market for new arrivals this window and transfer insider Dean Jones has now given his verdict on links between the Red Devils and one of Europe's finest playmakers.

Manchester United's January window…

January has come at a good time for Erik ten Hag as he looks to give his beleaguered squad a lift following an inconsistent run of form and the Red Devils' support will have an appetite for new arrivals this month.

Manchester United fans may be made to wait on that front, though, owing to football director John Murtough's comments last month suggesting that a quiet few weeks may be in store at Old Trafford.

All confirmed Premier League done deals: January transfer window 2024

With the January transfer window coming towards its conclusion, FFC has all the info for tracking your club’s winter transfer activity.

ByLuke Randall Feb 1, 2024

He stated at a Fans Forum in December: "Looking ahead to the January transfer window, we are not expecting it to be particularly busy. There will always be the possibility of deals around the edges of the squad, particularly in terms of finding opportunities for players who are not playing as much football as they would like."

Reports in the last few days have claimed that Crystal Palace playmaker Michael Olise is on the radar at Old Trafford and could be involved in a swap deal with former England Under-21 international Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who could head to Selhurst Park in a player-plus-cash agreement; nevertheless, this pursuit is more likely to develop in the summer window.

Now, journalist Jones has given his thoughts on an alternative Manchester United target who has been linked with an exciting move to Old Trafford.

Dean Jones reacts to Paulo Dybala rumours

According to reports, Manchester United could look to bring in Roma attacking midfielder Paulo Dybala this window. The Argentina international has a release clause worth just around £10-11 million, which could make him an affordable solution to the Red Devils' lack of a creative spark in the engine room.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Jones has indicated that Dybala would be a "mouthwatering" signing for Manchester United, and he has gone as far as to label him as "one of the best of his generation" in his position; however, he has also labelled any potential transfer as a "big risk" due to this being another marquee name heading towards the end of their prime.

Roma's Paulo Dybala

"We've talked about Dybala coming to the Premier League for years. I resigned myself to the fact that he is never actually going to come last year, yet here we are talking about him again. I just feel like it is a big risk to sign Dybala because there always seems to be something that holds him back from fully fulfilling his potential.

"He is a fantastic footballer – in terms of talent, he is one of the best of his generation – so signing him would be mouthwatering. There is no doubt about it. But Manchester United have signed players like this before, and it hasn't worked out.

"I'd be very careful about targeting somebody like this because the expectations will be so high, and it will be extremely difficult for him to meet them."

Samson ton in vain after Warner-Bairstow fireworks

The openers made light work of a stiff target by knocking down 110 within the first ten overs

The Report by Andrew Fidel Fernando29-Mar-20191:45

Five reasons why Sunrisers beat Royals

Rajasthan Royals may wonder how they lost this one. Their No. 3 Sanju Samson struck a sublime 102 not out off 55 balls. During the course of that knock, he had also shared a 119-run partnership off 75 balls, with captain Ajinkya Rahane. With the ball, legspinner Shreyas Gopal even took 3 for 27 – by a distance the best figures of the match. And yet, despite having had the best innings of the game, the biggest partnership, and the best bowler, Royals lost by a distance – Sunrisers Hyderabad having an entire over and five wickets to spare when the winning runs were hit.Where Royals had star individual performances, Sunrisers made better use of their resources across the board. Royals only had four batsmen take strike, but Sunrisers were better able to use their depth, because their top order batsmen took more chances. David Warner, for instance, had bludgeoned 67 off 36 balls and had motored his team to a position where they were well ahead of the required rate, and yet, continued to take chances, perhaps knowing there was plenty of firepower to come. He caught on the fine leg boundary off the 37th ball he faced.Jonny Bairstow, who was involved in a 110-run opening stand off 58 deliveries with Warner, and Vijay Shankar – who made 35 off 15 – were similarly adventurous, despite having propelled their team to positions of strength. They trusted the batsmen below them.Royals, meanwhile, had slow-ish periods of their innings. The Powerplay brought them only 35 runs, perhaps a consequence of Jos Buttler having lost his wicket in that period. Even the next three overs yielded modest returns – Royals sitting at 62 for 1 after 9 overs.Sunrisers still had to orchestrate their highest successful chase ever, beating the 188 they had made against Delhi Daredevils last year, but had Royals taken more risks at the top of their innings, Sunrisers may have had to chase even more than 199.Key innings for SunrisersWarner set the tone for the chase, hitting the first ball of the innings for four past fine leg, and the fourth ball for six over midwicket. In fact, each of the first eight boundaries of the innings – seven fours and that six – came off Warner’s bat. Opening partner Bairstow did soon find his own rhythm as well, and even though the two were dismissed in successive overs – the 10th and 11th of the innings – they had put Sunrisers on track.Vijay Shankar, coming in at No. 4 ensured they stayed on that track, hitting three sixes and a four in his 15-ball stay, in which he made 35.Even a serious middle-overs stutter, during which three Sunrisers batsmen were out for three runs, could not derail the good work these batsmen had done.Rashid Khan watchArguably the best T20 cricketer on the planet made sure to impose himself on this game as well. First, he bowled the imperious Jos Buttler behind his legs in the fourth over. He then completed an outstanding spell, conceding only a run-a-ball.When Sunrisers had their middle-order batting stutter, Rashid showed he could hold his nerve with the bat as well. Coming in at No. 7, Rashid struck vital boundaries to kill the game. With eight runs needed off eight deliveries, Rashid drilled an attempted Jofra Archer yorker for four through cover, then struck him high into the stands beyond deep square leg to seal the match. Rashid made 15 off 8 balls with the bat.Sanju Samson pulls powerfully•BCCI

The batting highlightWrists. Every batsman has them. Almost no one weaponises them to the extent that Sanju Samson did in the most spectacular over of the match – the 18th of Royals’ innings, bowled by Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The serenely-struck six over long off first ball was glorious enough, but it was Samson’s four fours square on the offside that were the gems that studded his innings. Bhuvneshwar didn’t do a lot wrong, really. All four of those deliveries were very nearly yorker length, and they weren’t too far wide of off stump. Samson, though, kept getting low and carving them majestically, either side of point. So graceful was he, the shots brought to mind the artistry of a VVS Laxman or Mahela Jayawardene. The fours came two at a time during a stretch of five deliveries. With a legside two breaking up that sequence, Samson reaped 24 from the over, and although Royals seemed destined for a score of about 180 for the majority of their innings, that over put something closer to 200 in their sights.Samson was outstanding, striking at over 185. Perhaps it was Rahane, who made 70 off 49 (a strike rate of 143), who needed to take more risks earlier on.

Newcastle eyeing move for new 27 y/o midfielder after Joelinton injury blow

Newcastle United are looking for midfielders to help fill the void left by Joelinton after his injury blow, with a "very good footballer" being lined up as an option.

Newcastle suffer Joelinton injury blow

The Magpies had big dreams going into the 2023/24 season, with hopes of another top-four finish in the Premier League, not to mention looking to go far in the Champions League. Instead, their campaign has turned into a huge disappointment, and while performances and results have often been nowhere near good enough, a constant stream of injuries haven't helped.

Newcastle have had so many important players missing for long periods of time, including Sven Botman, Dan Burn and Harvey Barnes – Sandro Tonali's 10-month suspension hasn't helped matters, too – and they are now having to make do without another key individual in Joelinton.

The Brazilian could even miss the rest of the season after suffering a groin issue, and his physicality and quality are set to be a massive loss in the coming months. In order to cover his absence, Howe may wish to delve into the transfer market, and one new potential target has emerged.

Newcastle eyeing Philip Billing move

According to The Daily Mail, Newcastle are interested in signing Bournemouth midfielder Philip Billing, as they look to make up for the big loss of Joelinton.

"Howe, who has transformed Joelinton into a Brazil international, rates him as one of his most influential players and his loss this season has seen Newcastle draw up a shortlist of midfield replacements. Mail Sport understands that includes Bournemouth’s Philip Billing, who Howe signed for the Cherries for £15m from Huddersfield in 2019. The Denmark midfielder, 27, scored seven times last season and is enjoying another fine campaign."

There are certainly similarities between Billing and Joelinton, given their tall stature and ability to dominate midfield battles in a physical sense, so he could be a shrewd addition by Newcastle in the January transfer window. The 27-year-old has been hailed by former Bournemouth manager Gary O'Neil, with the now Wolves boss calling him a "very good footballer".

This season, the Dane has two goals and assists apiece to his name in the Premier League, showing that he can chip in with end product, but he has also averaged 1.5 tackles per game, highlighting his ability off the ball, too.

Billing may feel that this is the right time in his career to move to a bigger club, testing himself at a club like Newcastle, and it is easy to envisage him playing a similar role to Joelinton, possibly making him a tailor-made replacement.

At 27, he could well be experienced enough not to be fazed by such a move, but he also has enough time on his side to make an impact at St James' Park for a number of years, making this one to watch.

Dhoni concerned by 'low-scoring' Chepauk pitch

“I don’t think we want to play on wickets like these because it becomes too low-scoring and it becomes slightly difficult for our batters to get going,” the Super Kings captain said

Deivarayan Muthu in Chennai09-Apr-20192:33

Dasgupta: Chepauk conditions shouldn’t have been alien to KKR

Weeks after expressing his displeasure over the slow, low Chepauk track in the season opener against Royal Challengers Bangalore, Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni was once again critical of the pitch following another low-scoring match, against Kolkata Knight Riders. After Super Kings inserted Knight Riders, keeping the dewy conditions in Chennai in mind, the visitors laboured to 108 for 9 in 20 overs, with only Andre Russell passing 20. Super Kings’ spinners Imran Tahir, Harbhajan Singh and Ravindra Jadeja bowled 15 dots each and ended with combined figures of 12-0-53-5.Super Kings’ batsmen themselves struggled to get going in the chase, but opener Faf du Plessis ushered them home with seven wickets and 16 balls to spare.Super Kings and Knight Riders played on the same pitch that was used for the hosts’ fixture against Kings XI Punjab on Saturday. Dhoni likened the pitch to the opening game of the season that produced a mere a 141 runs. The spinners accounted for 10 of the 13 wickets to fall in that game.”Well, again, it became like the first game,” Dhoni said at the post-match presentation on Tuesday. “We were cribbing about the track but we ended up winning the game. And [after] losing Bravo, it’s slightly difficult for us to get the combination right because we’re missing an allrounder and David [Willey] is not here, so it can’t be a straight swap.”So, if you look it looks a good wicket to us. But, I don’t think we want to play on wickets like these because it becomes too low-scoring and it becomes slightly difficult for our batters to get going. And also what happens is that it’s slightly more difficult if you’re batting first. As the dew comes in, it becomes slightly easier in the second half.”ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Seamer Deepak Chahar, who claimed 3 for 20, echoed his captain Dhoni’s thoughts and said Super Kings want a “better” pitch at home. He put down the sluggish nature of the pitches down to the extreme heat and humidity in Chennai.Ahead of the matches and during practice sessions, the groundstaff have shielded the playing square from getting to dry under the blazing Chennai sun by setting up a tent-like structure.”I’m happy I performed well, but obviously we’re looking for a better wicket,” Chahar said. “Nobody wants this type of a wicket. It’s [because of] the soil and heat and you can’t help it. It’s very hot here and the pitch curators are doing their best job to give us a good track. But, at the end of the day you can’t help it.”

Leicestershire close in on rare Sussex scalp after Tom Taylor's ten-for

Paul Horton guided his side to 99 for 1 chasing 230 to win at Hove after Sussex collapsed during the morning

Leicestershire were on course to claim their first County Championship win over Sussex for 17 years after making a positive start to their pursuit of a target of 230 at Hove. Skipper Paul Horton made an unbeaten 53 to take his side to 99 for 1 when rain arrived at tea and play was abandoned for the day at 5.35pm with Leicestershire still needing 131.Debutant Hasan Azad helped Horton put on an unbroken 72 for the second wicket after David Wiese had pinned Ateeq Javid lbw with an in-swinger for 11.Horton reached his half-century off 79 balls with seven fours but he needed a check by the Leicestershire physio after ducking into a Chris Jordan’s bouncer which struck him on the helmet.Their victory charge had been set up earlier in the day by offspinner Colin Ackermann, who finished with career-best figures of 5 for 69, and seamer Tom Taylor, who claimed four more victims to add to his six in the first innings for a match haul of 10 for 122, also a career-best.Sussex had resumed on 211 for 2 – a lead of 132 – and in good batting conditions must have been confident of setting the visitors a target of more than 300. Instead, they lost their last eight wickets in adding a further 97, three of them for 11 balls at a cost of two runs during the morning session.Taylor made a breakthrough in the first over when Stiaan van Zyl (41) feathered an outswinger to Lewis Hill, one of four catches for the Foxes’ wicketkeeper.Luke Wells and Harry Finch added 23 with few alarms before Sussex’s middle order was wrecked by Taylor and Ackermann. Wells lost patience on 48 and also lost his middle stump aiming an expansive drive at Taylor. In his next over Taylor had Wiese leg-before to a ball which kept a touch low while Sussex captain Ben Brown was lbw playing back to Ackermann for his second duck of the match.Sussex rebuilt through Finch and Jordan, who added 49 for the seventh wicket, but when it appeared that they were wresting back the initiative Ackermann completed his five-for with two wickets in three balls thanks to athletic catches at short leg by Azad. Jordan was held off a top-edged sweep and Ollie Robinson became the sixth Sussex batsman to go for a duck in the match, again off a misjudged sweep. The innings ended shortly after lunch. Danny Briggs was caught behind off Taylor’s outswinger and Finch, with only last man Mir Hamza for company, drove at Chris Wright and Hill did the rest behind the stumps.

Arsenal now looking at signing £50m striker alongside Joshua Zirkzee

Arsenal are now looking at signing a £50 million striker alongside the heavily-linked Joshua Zirkzee, with sporting director Edu seemingly weighing up Ivan Toney alternatives.

Arsenal dealt Ivan Toney roadblock

Amid the January transfer window and beforehand, the Gunners have been credited with a very serious interest in signing the aforementioned Brentford striker.

All confirmed Premier League done deals: January transfer window 2024

With the January transfer window coming towards its conclusion, FFC has all the info for tracking your club’s winter transfer activity.

ByLuke Randall Feb 1, 2024

Manager Mikel Arteta is said to want a proven goalscorer in the form of a world-class new number nine, and Toney is regularly mentioned as a top target for Arsenal in that regard. The England international, who is set to return from his ban for alleged gambling breaches imminently, scored 20 league goals last season and stands out as a very exciting option.

Ivan Toney

However, Bees boss Thomas Frank recently poured cold water over the idea of Toney leaving in January, saying it would take an "unbelievable" offer to prise him away from west London.

"The very short answer is yes," said Frank, when asked if Toney would stay (via BBC). "He is a Brentford player. He is here, we miss a few offensive players and I cannot see why we should sell him. I would love to have him here for a long time.

"It is not for me to discuss (an offer), but if I could ever recommend one, it would need to be an unbelievable price, so he will stay here."

Arsenal cannot afford to splash out marquee prices on winter window signings after spending over £200 million in the summer window (Miguel Delaney), making a move for Toney this month pretty unlikely as things stand. Resultingly, the north London title-chasers have been looking at other options. One of them, according to recent reports, is Bologna star Zirkzee.

The 6 foot 4 centre-forward is a player whom Arsenal have expressed interest in signing, and it is believed he could cost around £50 million. However, Zirkzee isn't the only other striker grabbing Edu's attention.

Arsenal looking at signing Dominic Solanke

As per Football Insider and journalist Pete O'Rourke, Bournemouth forward Dominic Solanke has admirers at the Emirates Stadium.

Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke.

Indeed, Arsenal are reportedly "looking at" signing Solanke as the Cherries brace for bids. Like Zirkzee, the Englishman is likely to cost in excess of £50 million after proving he can perform in Europe's most prestigious division.

Solanke boasts 12 goals in 19 league starts for Bournemouth so far, with former boss Gary O'Neil calling him "absolutely massive" for the club.
