Offspinner Will Somerville, who moved back to New Zealand earlier this year after three years playing for New South Wales, has been called into the national squad for the Test series against Pakistan after injury ruled out Todd Astle. At 34, Somerville would slot into New Zealand’s top ten of oldest Test debutants should he make his first appearance during the three-match series.Somerville was born in Wellington before moving to Australia as a child then returned across the Tasman where he made his debut for Otago in 2005. Having completed his education, he then hopped back to Sydney where he eventually made his New South Wales debut in 2014 and in the 2016-17 season claimed an impressive 35 wickets Sheffield Shield wickets. However, earlier this year he asked to be released from his NSW contract having been encouraged that there could be a route to higher honours in New Zealand.”We’ve been keeping a close eye on Will and like the look of his all-round game and skill-set,” selector Gavin Larsen said. “He bowls with good control and variation, while his added height means he gets that extra bit of bounce.”He’s also a handy batsman down the order, as he showed with his half-century in the most recent round of the Ford Trophy. The Test squad already has a legspinner in Ish Sodhi and a left-arm spinner in Ajaz Patel, so we think Will’s right arm offspin will balance out the attack nicely.”For Astle, the knee injury he sustained during the T20 leg of the tour means his hopes of adding to three Test caps will have to wait. Earlier this year he was ruled out of the second Test against England, in Christchurch, having picked up a side strain following an impressive performance in Auckland.”Despite a period of rest, Todd’s knee has, unfortunately, not responded as well as we had hoped,” Larsen said. “The best course of action for Todd is to get home and get it looked at, with an eye to returning in the home summer.”He worked really hard over the winter and is in some of the best shape of his career, so for this to happen is a cruel blow.”
Glasgow Rangers return to Europa League action this Thursday, and they will be hoping to gain revenge on Aris Limassol after they defeated the Gers last month in what was a rather surprising result, to say the least.
The Ibrox side were in a crisis then. Michael Beale had been sacked just days before and interim manager Steven Davis was thrown into the deep end and this culminated in a 2-1 defeat against the Cypriot side.
The Gers have gotten their act together since then, however, appointing Philippe Clement as their new manager and going unbeaten across his first eight matches.
The 1-1 draw with Aberdeen in the Premiership at the weekend was the first time the club have dropped points domestically since the Belgian arrived, and he will be looking for an immediate response.
With the fixtures coming thick and fast and several players unavailable due to suspension and not being included in the squad, the 49-year-old will need to make some changes to his starting XI.
With this in mind, we predict that the manager will make four changes from the stalemate against the Dons on the weekend…
1 GK – Jack Butland
Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland
The former Crystal Palace ‘keeper has been a revelation between the posts for the club this season, especially with recent goalkeeping troubles plaguing the side.
Butland has featured in every single match this term, conceding 21 goals across 24 matches, along with keeping 11 clean sheets.
A third group stage clean sheet would go a long way to seeing the Gers achieve knockout football.
2 RB – James Tavernier
James Tavernier
The 32-year-old is currently the top scorer for the Light Blues this season as the festive season approaches, finding the back of the net on 12 occasions so far.
The defender loves Europe’s second-tier competition and was even the top scorer during the 2021/22 edition, finishing with seven goals and remarkably, they all came during the knockout stages.
3 CB – Ben Davies
Ben Davies
The first change to the side will see Davies come in and replace Connor Goldson, who is suspended for the tie.
The centre-back picked up his third yellow card of the group stage against Sparta Prague in the previous tie and this means he won’t be available for selection against Aris.
Clement will replace him with Davies, who has started every match of the group stage so far, yet has made the starting XI just four times in the league.
4 CB – John Souttar
John Souttar
The second change Clement will make is bringing in Souttar for Leon Balogun, as the 35-year-old wasn’t included in the Europa League squad by Beale.
It was a poor decision, especially with Balogun’s experience, yet the Scot will be able to step up and form a solid partnership with Davies.
5 LB – Borna Barisic
Rangers defender Borna Barisic.
The Croatian started against Aberdeen, yet due to yet another error by Beale, who failed to include Ridvan Yilmaz in his Europa League squad, he will be forced to start against Aris.
Barisic only has a few months left of his current contract, and it remains to be seen whether this will be his final season in Glasgow.
6 CM – John Lundstram
Jack Butland
The Englishman has been solid in recent weeks and, under Clement, he has started all eight games and returned to the sort of form which saw him propel the Gers into the Europa League final in 2022.
During that semi-final tie against RB Leipzig, the former Premier League midfielder popped up with the winner with just minutes to go, thus earning cult hero status in the process.
Expect him to retain his place against the Cypriot side.
7 CM – Ryan Jack
Ryan Jack
The third change by the Belgian will see Jack return to the starting XI in place of Jose Cifuentes.
The Ecuadorian is finding his feet at the Ibrox side following a slow start and against the Dons, the 24-year-old looked comfortable at the heart of the midfield, taking 81 touches, and succeeded with 88% of his attempted passes.
Jack has started just once in the competition, yet he has won 88% of his ground duels and Clement may just prefer his experience alongside Lundstram.
8 RW – Ross McCausland
The man of the moment. McCausland will be Clement’s fourth and final change as he will come into the side.
Clement could repeat McCausland masterclass at Rangers with exciting teen
Clement has a host of youth talents in the Gers academy ready to break into the first team
ByRoss Kilvington Nov 28, 2023
The youngster has recently signed a new contract which will keep him at the club for the next three and half years, and it is a wise investment by Clement.
He has broken into the first team over the previous few weeks and secured his first start for the Light Blues against Livingston before the international break.
He could add something extra to the attack and don’t be surprised to see him shining yet again.
9 AM – Todd Cantwell
Todd Cantwell
The Englishman started on the right against Aberdeen and while he made five key passes and succeeded with 100% of his dribbles, there was something missing in his performance.
His best position is clearly just behind the striker and he registered eight goal contributions from that role during the second half of last season after joining from Norwich City.
This means Tom Lawrence will drop to the bench to accompany the attacking midfielder. The 29-year-old – who was dubbed as “wonderful” by journalist Josh Bunting – could be an important player for the club this term, and his impact will be useful from the bench tomorrow.
10 LW – Abdallah Sima
Rangers loanee Abdallah Sima.
The on-loan Brighton and Hove Albion starlet has really made the left wing role his own recently. Sima has managed to find the back of the net on nine occasions and he scored during the first two matches of the group stage, including the winner against Real Betis.
He will make yet another appearance in the starting XI against Aris.
Coming together at 60 for 4, the duo added an unbeaten 212 to push New Zealand’s lead to 198
The Report by Danyal Rasool06-Dec-2018
Kane Williamson is congratulated by Henry Nicholls on reaching fifty•AFP
Stumps Where Kane Williamson began the morning simply trying to keep his side afloat, he will put his feet up this evening pondering the best way to press home an advantage that now decidedly belongs to his side in Abu Dhabi. A superlative second-innings century, his first in Asia in the second dig, took New Zealand within two runs of a 200-run lead. His partnership with Henry Nicholls, who looked unsettled in the morning, but is no longer jittery – had exceeded 200 by stumps as the visitors flipped over the advantage that had eluded them for the best part of three days. It took a Herculean partnership, unbeaten over 80 overs, and just a handful of balls away from being the longest-ever in the UAE.It is somewhat crazy to recall the situation this game was in just over 24 hours ago. A few minutes before tea on the third day, Pakistan stood – invincibly, purportedly – at 286 for 3, with Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq having brought up the 200-run stand, and pushing their side into the lead. But from thereon, they repeated the same mistakes that led to their downfall at this very venue in the first match of the series, even ending up eerily with exactly the same 74-run lead. The failure to press home a first-innings advantage for the second time in three Tests appeared then as if it might be costly, and Williamson and Nicholls saw to it that it is.Short of the most dramatic of collapses tomorrow morning, Pakistan will either hang on to a draw or succumb as they have done multiple times in the past on the final day. It is a damning indictment for a side that should have come out the other end with a 3-0 whitewash. There isn’t much to say about Williamson that won’t sound like an understatement. So good has the New Zealand skipper been over a number of years, it is a travesty he doesn’t get the attention leading lights such as Virat Kohli, Steven Smith and Joe Root do. Today, he was at his free-flowing best, the footwork impeccable, the drives mesmeric, and the composure hypnotic. The transfer of weight between the front and back foot never once let him down, and was especially evident when he was in his 90s.A cover drive off either foot to Hasan Ali took him first to 98, and then his 19th Test hundred. New Zealand have never lost a Test in which their talismanic captain has reached three figures in the second innings, and with the 28-year-old unbeaten on 139 at stumps, that looks unlikely to change tomorrow.Nicholls at the other end will have seen his stocks skyrocket this series. Every time he has been among the runs, they have come in the second innings with his side behind in the game, and fighting to stay alive. All three second innings have produced half-centuries, and just as the one in the first Test proved priceless, this one could achieve similarly gratifying results. It is a testament to a good player how they come through when their side is struggling, and by that yardstick, Nicholls cuts a very impressive figure, given the baptism of fire he was put through when he first came in. Standing ten runs from a Test match hundred, few batsmen will have deserved a ton more based on performances over a full series. In the final session, Pakistan surprisingly refused to take the new ball, persisting with the old one for 104 overs. It didn’t seem close to producing the results Pakistan looked for, but Sarfraz opted to stick with it for the spin it was generating. Frustratingly for him, though, New Zealand were more than a match for it, and the final session, one drop of Williamson aside, was perhaps the most controlled for the visitors. Moreover, Sarfraz continued to use Yasir Shah and Bilal Asif for much of the final two sessions, deciding against turning to Mohammad Hafeez but for one over before tea, and overlooking Haris Sohail altogether.Their catching is something Pakistan will reflect on. Yasir might have had a memorable day, breaking Clarrie Grimmett’s record for the fastest to 200 Test wickets early on with the lbw dismissal of William Somerville, but more importantly, he dropped two sharp chances Williamson provided. The first one was perhaps the easier challenge, coming at quick but not impossible speed at square leg when the right-hander was on 80. Nicholls, too, was reprieved once at short leg, and with the sort of commitment this pair showed, they weren’t in need of a helping hand from the opposition. The most curious passage of play, though, had come in the morning while Taylor was at the crease, entertaining and baffling in equal measure. His dash to get off the strike against Yasir was understandable – no batsman has fallen victim to Yasir more often, but he attacked Shaheen Afridi at the other end the way a pinch-hitter might. On a day when a Williamson-Taylor partnership might have caused the greatest damage to Pakistan, New Zealand’s most prolific scorer was on a devil-may-care mission for a cameo instead. It never amounted to more than that, though, with a well-laid plan by Pakistan seeing him find the deep-square-leg fielder, for a 14-ball 22.Tragically for Pakistan, the pair that followed had a more solemn approach to the task at hand. Nicholls and Williamson put on a masterclass for the ages and effectively batted Pakistan out of a game they controlled for over three days. There is a lot Pakistan could learn from them about how to press home an advantage when you have it, but the time for learning has long passed. Abu Dhabi 2018 looks set to have Part 2 after all.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have had a difficult season but certainly not a disastrous one, sitting seven points from the relegation zone. However, the biggest issue for Gary O'Neil's side has been the lack of consistency.
There is a lot of quality in Wolves' squad but there are some positions that may need to be improved upon in the near future if the Midlands club are to return to a position where they vie for one of the seven European spots in the Premier League.
Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Gary O'Neil.
O'Neil is reportedly eyeing up some defensive reinforcements to bolster his backline amidst what will likely be a difficult second half of the campaign.
Wolves transfer news – Victor Nelsson
According to Turkish outlet Aksam, Wolves are interested in signing Galatasaray centre-back Victor Nelsson in January. The report claims that the player is "very disturbed" with his current situation with the Super Lig champions and is looking for an exit route once the winter window opens in just a few weeks.
Galatasaray defender Victor Nelsson.
The Danish centre-back's deal with Galatasaray expires in 2026, but Aksam have further revealed that O'Neil's side are exploring the possibility of a loan with an option to buy, although the Turkish giants are not willing to allow the 23-year-old to leave for cheap.
Nelsson has made 18 appearances for Galatasaray this term, including four in the UEFA Champions League as the team looked primed for qualification to the next round.
However, the defender has played merely 1,123 minutes, starting just seven times from 18 games in the Champions League group phase and the Super Lig, as per Transfermarkt.
Victor Nelsson's stats this season
Nelsson came from Nordsjaelland's esteemed academy in Denmark before moving to Copenhagen in 2019. It was with the latter that he made 87 appearances in all competitions and was labelled a "monster" by football scout Jacek Kulig after one of his displays at the Parken Stadium, having played exclusively as a centre-back for the Danish outfit.
Upon signing for Galatasaray in 2021, a £25m release clause was inserted into his contract, as confirmed by the club, and there has been significant interest in signing the defender from clubs in the Premier League, including Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, with Wolves being the most recent name thrown into the hat.
Head coach O'Neil has preferred to use a back three this season, with Toti and captain Max Kilman partnering the experienced Craig Dawson in the middle. With Toti and Kilman being 24 and 26, Nelsson could potentially be the long-term replacement for 33-year-old Dawson.
The veteran has had a decent season at Molineux but has struggled in recent weeks, particularly on Saturday in a 2-1 defeat away to Arsenal.

Dawson was at partial fault for Arsenal's opening goal of the match as his failed tackle fell directly to Bukayo Saka who scored past Jose Sa.
Furthermore, Nelsson could be an excellent replacement for the Europa Conference League winner and has been outperforming Dawson in a number of key defensive metrics this season.

Dawson is still currently a better tackler than Nelsson but the Dane is outperforming Wolves' experienced centre-half in every other area, particularly on the ball which will become more and more important for O'Neil as he looks to adapt Wolves' system to be more expansive over time.
For this reason, Nelsson could be an excellent addition to the squad should they secure his services in January.

The opener’s first fifty of the MSL, and an incisive spell from Dwayne Bravo helped Paarl Rocks to a six-wicket win over Nelson Mandela Bay Giants and secure the third position
The Report by Liam Brickhill12-Dec-2018
Raton Gomes/BCB
Cameron Delport’s second fifty of the Mzansi Super League and an incisive spell from Dwayne Bravo guided Paarl Rocks to a six-wicket win over Nelson Mandela Bay Giants at a sunny Boland Park. Delport’s hitting secured a vital bonus as Rocks chased down Giants’ 129 for 8 in 15.2 overs.Needing to score at 6.5 an over at the beginning of their chase to win outright, or at 8.1 for a bonus-point win inside 16 overs, Rocks progressed in fits and starts until the 10th over, when Delport ignited the charge against Jon-Jon Smuts’ left-arm spin. He hammered two enormous sixes over the leg side, and was the fortuitous recipient of a second life via a dropped catch near the boundary, as Rocks went after the bonus point that would secure their trip to Johannesburg on Friday.Rocks had taken just 37 off the Powerplay, losing Henry Davids in the process, and when captain Faf du Plessis fell for 6, driving Aaron Phangiso into the hands of Chris Morris at deep extra cover, Rocks needed a boost. Delport gave them exactly that, taking Smuts on and then reverse sweeping legspinner Dyllan Matthews for two boundaries in his first over of the match.Giants were hamstrung by the absence of Imran Tahir, who would have been a challenging prospect on a pitch that played a touch on the slow side and took spin throughout. Without the challenge of a strike bowler for the conditions, Rocks were in full control when Delport raised a 33-ball fifty in the 12th over.Delport brought up a fifty stand with Aiden Markram – largely a bystander as Delport took control – by flaying Junior Dala to the midwicket boundary in the 13th over, following up his pull with an even meatier shot that landed on the grass banks. That left Rocks with a target of 28 in three overs to secure a bonus point, and Delport swiped two more sixes off Phangiso and Sisanda Magala, both over deep square leg, to push his team closer. He was bowled attempting another big hit off Magala from the very next ball, and when Bravo picked out Heino Kuhn at deep square leg with a pull in the same over, Rocks needed to score nine from the 16th over, bowled by Phangiso. David Wiese slogged the first ball over midwicket, let a wide pass him by, and then secured a victory that sparked wild celebrations with a skied hit that landed safely and brought two runs. The smallest ground in the MSL, Boland Park nevertheless draws committed home support, and Rocks performed a celebratory lap to thank their fans after the game. Bravo even leapt up onto one of the dancers’ podiums to perform a well-received rendition of his song , and was joined by Mangaliso Mosehle to wild cheers. The upbeat mood in the Rocks camp stood in stark contrast to the downcast Giants, who had stumbled through their innings and failed to put up a challenging total, the sporting surface notwithstanding. Four of the Giants batsmen passed 20, but none was able to force the issue against a disciplined Rocks attack.Rudi Second’s 37 was the highest score, but he reached that total without hitting a boundary, and it wasn’t until Chris Morris strode to the crease at the start of the 18th over that the innings found some momentum. He hammered two sixes over midwicket off Dane Paterson, and one straight back over Bravo, who had been the pick of the attack.Bravo started his work with the ball in the ninth over by setting Kuhn up with a slower ball before firing in a quicker one to strike him in front of the stumps, and then returned to work his magic at the death. Coming around the wicket, Bravo bowled Second around his legs and then removed Marco Marais via an excellent diving outfield catch by Markram.Bravo also had a hand in two run-outs in the final over, invigorating the afternoon crowd as they realized their team had a straightforward chance to book their place in the play-offs. Finally, Bravo played the main role leading Rocks’ celebrations with his trademark dance-moves, and Rocks will be hoping for more of the same when they meet Jozi Stars at the Wanderers on Friday night with the prospect of a Cape derby final if they are successful there too.
