Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali has been banned from football for 10 months, but another setback has now potentially emerged, according to an update from journalist Craig Hope.
Sandro Tonali ban
The Magpies signed the Italian from Serie A giants AC Milan during the summer transfer window, in what looked like a fantastic piece of business by the club.
Tonali had shone in his homeland, helping Milan reach the semi-finals of the Champions League last season, and was seen as someone who could take Eddie Howe's side to the next level.
After a dream debut that saw the 23-year-old score in a 5-1 win at home to Aston Villa in the league, disaster has struck in recent weeks with the news that Tonali has received a 10-month ban from football for breaching betting rules during his time as a Milan player.
It is a massive blow for Howe and anyone associated with Newcastle, and immediately hurts their chances of going far in the Champions League, as well as qualifying for the competition again next season – but now another potential setback has emerged regarding the situation.
Fresh Sandro Tonali blow
Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, Hope explained that Tonali may have broken betting rules since moving to Newcastle, which is contrary to earlier reports:
"Exclusive: The Football Association are now investigating whether Sandro Tonali broke betting rules AFTER his £52m move to Newcastle in July. The player is currently banned for 10 months for illegal gambling activity in Italy."
In his article for The Daily Mail itself, Hope goes on to add that the Italy international "continued to bet on football while under their jurisdiction", and that if this is proved to be the case, Tonali "could be subject to further sanction" from the FA.
This is a very worrying development from a Newcastle perspective considering they are already without the young midfielder for the rest of the season, not to mention what a bitter blow it is for the player himself, who will also miss Euro 2024 with Italy.
This fresh development has the potential to lead to a further ban, as Tonali could be found guilty of continuing to bet after he made the move from Milan to Newcastle, which doesn't bear thinking about.
What he cannot afford to do is become too big a distraction for the Magpies on the pitch at a time when their form has been a little hit-and-miss.
A good run of results ended recently with a 1-0 defeat at home to Borussia Dortmund, which could be a damaging Champions League result, while their 2-2 draw away to Wolves in the Premier League twice saw Howe's men fail to hold onto a lead. That being said, the 3-0 win at Manchester United in the EFL Cup more than steadied the ship, though they need to retain that level moving forward.
The hope is that nothing new comes from this latest Tonali development and that his 10-month ban ends up being the worst-case scenario, but it is clear that a replacement is needed in January, with Newcastle linked with the likes of Kalvin Phillips, Ruben Neves and N'Golo Kante, among others.
The pink ball dominated in the day-night match, Surrey’s bowlers hitting back after Tom Bailey had taken five wickets for Lancashire

Sam Curran unfurls a cover drive•Getty Images
ScorecardAt around 2.30pm, Surrey and England’s Sam Curran strode to the crease at The Oval with his side in some disarray on 51 for 4. Batting one place higher than he normally would owing to the absence of Ollie Pope, he coincidentally emerged shortly after Pope himself was out at Trent Bridge, where many Surrey fans felt Curran himself should have been. After three impressive Tests, including a Man of the Match performance in the thriller at Edgbaston, the sense of a grievous injustice done to a young man filled the humid, claggy air in South East London. Supporters growled their righteous encouragement which came tinged with hostility for the powers that be. County cricket is filled with hostility for the powers that be right now, and Surrey fans are at the forefront of this growling. There was something discernibly different about the Sam Curran that marched out to bat this time. Until now he has been the junior wunderkind at a club that is churning out highly effective and talented youngsters. He has been the younger brother to Tom. The teenage scamp with more than a hint of Richmal Crompton’s Just William, a childlike frown of intense concentration never far from his face whether he’s batting or bowling. The youthful prodigy who many say will become a better batsman than bowler but one whose bowling seems to improve year on year. A player yet to be fully formed around whom towering hopes are built, but still a player in the making.Today, though, he arrived at the middle as an England Test match star. His approach to the wicket seemed different. There was almost a swagger. He made Lancashire’s Joe Mennie wait at the top of his mark as he surveyed the field. He might almost have been chewing gum, wielding an SS Jumbo and wearing a West Indian cap at a jaunty angle.Far from being in a sulk over his temporary displacement from the England team, he was bristling with intent. For 68 minutes pretty much every one of the fifty balls bowled to him pinged off the middle of his bat. One particular drive over extra cover was hit with what looked like cussed, furious but controlled rage. By the time he was out for 40, edging a beauty from Tom Bailey to the keeper, England had almost completely subsided at Trent Bridge, where their highest scorer, as many Surrey fans were keen to point out, had managed only 39.Curran’s return to a Surrey side that looked rusty after a month of T20 cricket came at the expense of his brother Tom. How times have changed. Last year Tom Curran was the work horse of this team’s bowling attack, pretty much the first name on the team sheet. But the elder Curran has missed a fair dollop of this season with injury and in the meantime Morne Morkel, Jade Dernbach, Rikki Clarke and Sam Curran have emerged as the most potent seam bowling quartet in the country. In addition to Pope, Surrey were also missing Scott Borthwick and Jason Roy, the latter to a self-inflicted injury with a rebounding bat in the Oval dressing room last Wednesday that will feature prominently, no doubt, in one of those lists that also includes Quinton de Kock walking his dog and Derek Pringle writing a letter, but right now is not generating too much mirth in Kennington as Surrey seek a first County Championship title in 16 years.Apart from a pugnacious 43 from Aaron Finch and a classic fast bowlers’ stand of 56 for the ninth wicket between Morkel and Dernbach, there was, unusually, not much to recommend in a skittish display against the pink ball that ended after just 52.2 overs with a mere 211 on the board. But Surrey are not top of the table for no reason. Lancashire were soon reduced to 41 for 3, including Haseeb Hameed bowled for the fifth time this season. As the ball grew softer and before the lights took full effect Dane Vilas counter-attacked superbly for the day’s highest score of 61, but cometh the hour, Surrey turned to Curran. Leaving extra cover open he set up Vilas with two balls snaking back into the right-hander’s pads before pushing one across him. Vilas, a wise old head at 33, was outfoxed and couldn’t resist the drive, edging into the gleeful gloves of Ben Foakes.Jade Dernbach was forced out of the attack mid-over with an injury which will test Surrey’s resources in this match but Clarke picked up a late brace of wickets as Lancashire closed on 134 for 6. It was England’s Sam Curran, though who had prised open the door. How England missed him at Trent Bridge.

Six major venues across South Africa will host the competition which is set to start in November

Wanderers, Kingsmead, Newlands, SuperSport Park, St. George’s Park and Boland Park will be the host venues for the six teams in Cricket South Africa’s new-look T20 league.CSA announced the venues following an assessment by Nielsen Sport, a sports industry data analysis firm. While CSA has asserted that they own all the teams, the chief executives at the various bodies that run South Africa’s cricket grounds – Cricket Boland, Western Province Cricket Association, Eastern Province Cricket Board, Gauteng Cricket Board, Northerns Cricket Union and KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union – will essentially be the team managers, appointing coaches.”The key mandate given to all our Members in applying to be a host venue was the primary goal of luring new and traditional fans, other sports fans and the wider general public to our stadia,” said CSA chief executive Thabang Moroe. “This process was, in fact, started some time ago when CSA embarked on a National Stadium Grading Process of all our first-class venues.”The various CEOs who have been running those stadiums will act as managers for these various teams. They will come out and announce the new names of the teams, the logos of what the teams will look like, and they are the ones who will then appoint the coaches, and the coaches will appoint their own support staff.”The league itself has not yet been named, but Moroe explained during a pitch-side interview at South Africa’s T20I against Zimbabwe in East London that it would have a “uniquely South African” name.”It won’t be called the Global T20,” he said. “I hope it’s a name that South Africans will be proud of. We just thought of a uniquely South African name.”Moroe’s interview during the game was aired on SABC 3, the same channel that the T20 league games will be shown on after CSA’s announced a partnership with SABC, South Africa’s public broadcaster. That deal reportedly gave the SABC exclusive official broadcast rights for the Sub-Saharan regionThe new league is set to launch on November 9, with the player draft scheduled for October 17. While the details of the draft are yet to be divulged, team names are expected to be announced in the next few days. But with under a month to go, the timeline to market and deliver the event is shrinking, especially as CSA and SABC are still yet to agree to the specifics of their deal and sign a full contract.”We’re working very hard with SABC in terms of drafting the contract, we just want to wrap up the long-form agreement between us, the SABC as well as our other partners then we can make all the necessary announcements,” Moroe said at Buffalo Park.”This is purely a step that we need to follow from a risk point of view, giving the disappointment of us having to postpone the league last year. The board has given me a strict mandate that before we announce anything, we have all the necessary agreements in place and they’re signed.”Despite losses of over R200 million following the failure of the inaugural GLT20, CSA has said that its annual financial statements would still show “substantial reserves”. They will have to dig a little deeper into those reserves in their new league’s first season, for which they are budgeting for a R40 million loss. While those sorts of costs are nothing unusual – it took years for IPL teams to start making a profit, the Big Bash League made a AUD33 million loss over its first five years, and the ECB’s new competition, The Hundred, is facing spiralling costs – CSA is also facing the threat of legal action from several owners of the initial GLT20. That may necessitate further costs before the new T20 league gets underway.

Celtic head into the November international break top of the Scottish Premiership table after 13 matches and are currently on course to secure their third consecutive domestic title.
The Hoops were hit with a blow behind the scenes over the summer as manager Ange Postecoglou, who won the treble in Scotland last season, decided to move on to join Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.
Brendan Rodgers was then brought in for his second spell in Glasgow and has won 11 and drawn two of his first 13 league games back at the helm.
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers.
The Northern Irishman was hit with disruption to his squad throughout the summer transfer window as Jota and Carl Starfelt were both sold, to Al Ittihad and Celta Vigo respectively, and Aaron Mooy retired.
He could have further disruptions to deal with at the start of 2024 as Kyogo Furuhashi has been touted with a possible exit from Paradise in January.
Celtic transfer news – Kyogo Furuhashi
It was recently reported by TEAMtalk that the Japan international is the subject of interest from two clubs in Europe ahead of the winter market opening up for business.
Brentford and Union Berlin are both said to be eyeing up the former Vissel Kobe star as a potential target to bolster their forward lines ahead of the second half of the season.
However, the outlet did claim that it would take a bid within the region of £20m to tempt Rodgers and Celtic into making the decision to part ways with the impressive attacker.
It was also stated that Kyogo is currently happy with his situation in Glasgow and is in 'no rush' to secure an exit from the Scottish giants in January.
Celtic forward Kyogo Furuhashi.
He put pen to paper on a new four-year contract earlier this year and that means that his deal is not due to expire until the end of the 2026/27 campaign.
This suggests that the Hoops are in a strong position heading into January as the terrific marksman is on a long-term contract and is unlikely to push for or force a transfer away from Parkhead.
However, the club should have contingencies in place so that they are able to react quickly if a move does materialise for the centre-forward, as losing him would represent a huge blow to Rodgers' squad due to the goals that he provides on a regular basis.
Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show recently, journalist Mark Guidi named Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland as someone who could replace Kyogo if he is called up by Japan for the Asian Cup in January.
The reporter described the Scotland international as a player who scores goals with "his eyes shut" and that it would be an ideal signing as someone who knows the league and could hit the ground running.
However, Celtic should consider a swoop for Shankland for a different reason – as an heir to Kyogo if Brentford or Union are able to convince the club to cash in on the striker.
Kyogo's season in numbers
The 28-year-old finisher has enjoyed a solid, if unspectacular, start to the season under Rodgers after his extraordinary exploits throughout the 2022/23 campaign.
Kyogo has chipped in with six goals and two assists in 13 Scottish Premiership appearances for the Hoops so far this term, alongside two goals in four Champions League outings.

The Celtic number eight has averaged a goal every 2.13 matches across those two competitions, which is an impressive return but a drop-off from the numbers he displayed under Ange Postecoglou last year.
During the 2022/23 season, the Japanese hotshot recorded an outstanding 27 goals and three assists in 36 top-flight clashes, which included 31 starts, and that is an average of one strike every 1.33 appearances.
These statistics show that Kyogo's form has dipped under Rodgers but that does not mean that he is not an excellent player for Celtic, as the talented gem is the club's joint-top scorer in the league this season – alongside Matt O'Riley and David Turnbull.
With this in mind, Celtic would need a top-class replacement for the Japan international and Shankland's form for Hearts over the last 18 months suggests that he has the potential to step into the spotlight at Parkhead.
The statistics that show why Celtic should move for Shankland
Much like Kyogo, the 6 foot 1 whiz has had a decent start to the Premiership season but is yet to get back to the form that he displayed last term.
Shankland has racked up five goals in 12 top-flight appearances for his current club and has found the back of the net against both Celtic and Rangers already.
The 28-year-old forward has also scored five goals and provided two assists in seven domestic and European cup matches combined this season.

As you can see from the table above, the Hearts' star's performances have not been vastly different from Kyogo's for the Hoops, although he has missed four fewer 'big chances' in front of goal than Rodgers' centre-forward.
His displays in the Premiership last season, however, are what the club may look at with regard to his suitability to take over from the Japan international.
Shankland racked up an eye-catching 24 goals and four assists in 37 league appearances, which included 33 starts, and this worked out as an average of one strike every 1.54 outings.
The Scottish dynamo, who scored 28 goals in all competitions during the 2022/23 campaign, has proven his ability to score goals at an impressive rate at Premiership level and would come in as a player who could hit the ground running, given his experience in the league.
Therefore, Shankland, who is the same age as the Hoops star, could be a dream heir to Kyogo's position in the squad if Celtic decide to cash in on him for £20m in January, and should be a striker they look at should they opt to enter the market for a new number nine.
Newcastle United are believed to have sent their scouts to watch a world-renowned star who has been described as a "£100m player", according to a fresh transfer update.
Newcastle want January signings
Eddie Howe could be desperate to get to the January transfer window without any further injury problems, having seen his squad riddled with fitness issues throughout this season. Newcastle have had so many absentees at different points during the campaign, whether it be Sven Botman, Bruno Guimarares, Callum Willson or Alexander Isak, to name just a few. The winter window will allow the Magpies to add to their squad, assuming they are allowed to financially, and they have been linked with a number of players in recent weeks.
In midfield, Manchester City ace Kalvin Phillips has been backed to join Newcastle, with the 27-year-old arguably seen as the best option to come in for the suspended Sandro Tonali. Meanwhile, further attacking reinforcements have also been mooted, and Brentford striker Ivan Toney is also considered a target for the Magpies, with his own suspension ending in January.
Newcastle eyeing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia move
According to a new transfer claim from 90min, Newcastle have scouted Napoli superstar Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, with other Premier League clubs also in the mix.
The report states that "Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United and Newcastle United all had representatives in attendance" to watch the Georgia international in action for his country against Spain on Sunday, as the possible Newcastle transfer target scored in a 3-1 defeat.
While those present at the game may have been there to watch any number of players in action, "sources have confirmed to 90min that Kvaratskhelia in particular was under the microscope." Kvaratskhelia could be a sensational signing by Newcastle, whether that be in January or next summer, with the Napoli ace arguably one of the world's most exciting attacking players over the past 18 months or so.
The 22-year-old was an integral part of his side winning their first Serie A title since 1990, with the Magpies target registering 22 goal contributions (12 goals and 10 assists) in 34 league outings, linking superbly with Victor Osimhen in the process. Former Rubin Kazan manager Leonid Slutsky has called him a "£100m player" in the past, too, which says a lot about his current ability and long-term potential.

Kvaratskhelia is a footballer who would not only get Newcastle fans off their seats with his trickery, pace and unpredictability out wide, but also back it up with relentless end product, which is something Alla Saint-Maximin often failed to do, for example. The ex-Magpies man only scored 13 times in 124 appearances, which isn't at the level required at St James' Park these days.
Whether Newcastle have the funds to wrestle the Georgian superstar away from Napoli remains to be seen – he is contracted at the Serie A champions until the summer of 2027 – but he is someone who could take Howe's side to another level, possibly becoming a new attacking maverick hero at St James' Park.
