Afghanistan stay alive after spinners' brilliance sets up narrow win

Afghanistan nearly bottled what should have been a straightforward chase of 198, but the insurance provided by the brilliance of their spinners from earlier in the day just about bailed them out

The Report by Akshay Gopalakrishnan15-Mar-2018Afghanistan nearly bottled what should have been a straightforward chase of 198, but the insurance provided by the brilliance of their spinners just about bailed them out in their Super-Sixes clash against West Indies. Throughout the 47.4 overs that the chase lasted, it always seemed like Afghanistan would pull this off one way or the other. And yet, they never managed to eliminate the apprehension that accompanied as one batsman after the other perished in their dash towards an early finish.Where a cool head and common sense was the demand of the hour – the asking rate was always in control – rash judgement and impulsive strokeplay took over. In the end, they managed to hang in there, scraping through by three wickets, to hand West Indies their first defeat of the tournament, and keep their own campaign alive. The second-innings indiscretions were a far cry from the top-class performance that their spinners put in. Facing a must-win in every remaining match, Afghanistan presented their best selves yet in the tournament to rein in a powerful West Indies line-up.The circumstances couldn’t be seemingly any more averse to bowling. These were pristine batting conditions, with the sun beating down on the Harare Sports Club, and a surface that came with a thin layer of sheen. To add to that, West Indies were coming into the game with an average first-innings score of 307 in the tournament. But Afghanistan’s opening pair of pacer Dawlat Zadran and offspinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman demonstrated the old adage: well-begun is half-done.Having seized the early advantage with the wicket of Chris Gayle, Afghanistan were relentless. Mujeeb’s 3 for 33 underpinned what ended up being a spin-dominated innings, with as many as 39 overs coming from the slow bowlers. Mohammad Nabi became the first Afghanistan bowler to 100 ODI wickets, as West Indies limped to an underwhelming 197 for 8.Mujeeb and Dawlat complemented each other perfectly. While Dawlat had the West Indies batsmen on a leash by continually probing away in the channel outside off, Mujeeb flummoxed them with a whole array of variants. Inside his first two overs, West Indies had been subjected to conventional offbreaks, carrom balls, topspinners, and a googly that smashed the top of an unsuspecting Gayle’s off stump. It wasn’t until the eighth over, when Evin Lewis swept Mujeeb hard through fine leg for the first of four fours in nine balls, that West Indies began to find momentum. That was, however, immediately snuffed out by Nabi, who struck with his first ball. Nabi’s delivery came on with the arm and hit Shimron Hetmyer’s pad, but not before it had brushed the inside edge that the umpire had failed to spot.Lewis’ misjudgment in calling for a suicidal single in the next over had him run out to a direct throw from Najibullah Zadran as Afghanistan further established their ascendancy – reinforced by the fact that Rashid Khan, the team’s best bowler, made his first appearance as late as the 23rd over.Marlon Samuels and Shai Hope arrested the slide with a 55-run fourth-wicket stand, but it was an association where a lack of strike-rotation was all too evident. With the duo progressing at three to the over, Rashid could afford to hold Mujeeb back for a third spell.West Indies’ only bright passage came during Jason Holder’s burst of 28, but he fell to a sharp catch by Najibullah at long-on off Mujeeb that sent them right back into their shell. Hope, who survived an extremely close leg before shout against Rashid on 18, barely made Afghanistan feel the pinch. He alone ate up 55 dots, and picked an inopportune moment to get out – in the 43rd over, with West Indies searching for acceleration, when he was the set batsman.Like Afghanistan, West Indies’ bowlers were sharp and accurate to begin with. Keemo Paul, the debutant, struck with his first legal delivery, getting Javed Ahmadi to play all around a length ball that straightened, and trapped him leg before. But the rash strokes began costing them soon after, Mohammad Shahzad slashing a wide delivery to cover.Rahmat Shah then played the most important knock of Afghanistan’s innings. His trio of boundaries off Carlos Brathwaite in the 14th over signaled that Afghanistan were getting a move on. He found two able partners – first in Samiullah Shenwari, with whom he added 66 for the third wicket, and then in Mohammad Nabi, who helped him add 49 for the fourth wicket. It took a brilliant diving catch by Hetmyer at deep square leg to end the second of those associations. In their 93-ball association, the duo had played out nearly 10 overs of dots. Still, with 66 needed off 84 balls with six wickets in hand, this was Afghanistan’s game to lose.Rahmat continued to eat away at the target until, in trying to force a cut, he picked out backward point. Now, Afghanistan were feeling the jitters for the first time in the chase. Najibullah and Gulbadin Naib took them closer with handy cameos, but perished to profligate shots. It was Afghanistan’s batting depth that eventually got the job done: Rashid, with an ODI average of 21, bats at No. 8; he saw them through.West Indies were culpable of their own share of lapses. They dropped catches of Rahmat, Shenwari, Nabi and Rashid. In all, the reprieves cost them 58 runs: damage that is irreversible when you’re defending 197.

Newcastle keen on promising midfielder in January, Howe is a huge fan

Newcastle United could make further signings in the January transfer window and one player has emerged as a primary target, according to a fresh update.

Will Newcastle make signings in January?

The Magpies have steadied the ship after a difficult start to the season, enjoying a positive couple of results that will hopefully signal the start of a big turnaround in fortunes.

Eddie Howe's side battled their way to a 1-0 win at home to Brentford in the Premier League last Saturday, before drawing 0-0 away to AC Milan in their Champions League opener – a result that could look so important come the end of the group stages later this year. They may not have been vintage performances, but it has clearly still been an improvement.

Newcastle enjoyed a good summer in the transfer market, most notably bringing in Sandro Tonali and Harvey Barnes from Milan and Leicester City respectively, but more signings are required moving forward, in order for them to keep in touch with their rivals at the top of the Premier League and not go backwards.

Added depth in the midfield is something that Howe could look to do in January, allowing rotation to be aided across four different competitions in the second half of the season, and it looks as though they have lined up one key target already.

Southampton midfielder Carlos Alcaraz.

Will Newcastle sign Carlos Alcaraz?

According to an update from talkSPORT, Newcastle are eyeing a move for Southampton midfielder Carlos Alcaraz in January, with Howe personally seeing the 20-year-old as a strong option to bring in.

"Newcastle are among a number of clubs keeping tabs on Southampton midfielder Carlos ‘Charlie’ Alcaraz. The Magpies made an enquiry for Alcaraz during the summer transfer window and manager Eddie Howe is an admirer of the 20-year-old Argentine.

"It will not have gone unnoticed at St James’s Park that Alcaraz is struggling to command a place in Saints’ starting line-up despite the fact the recently relegated side have lost their last three games. Alcaraz scored four goals in 18 Premier League games last season following a £12m move from Racing Club."

Alcaraz may not necessarily be an established footballer who is playing at the top level every week, but he could be an exiting young signing who comes in as a squad player, developing over time and becoming a key man eventually.

The 20-year-old has scored five goals in 28 appearances for Southampton, as well as chipping in with two assists, and he did play 18 times in the Premier League last season, showing that he can perform in England's top flight.

Former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has praised Alcaraz in the past, saying he "has a bit of everything in his game", while football talent scout Jacek Kulig has lauded him as "one of the biggest talents in Argentina".

It is encouraging to see Newcastle continuing to look at bringing in top young talent, rather than simply news signings for the here and now, and it will enable the club to keep progressing for many years to come, rather than resting on their laurels and not reaching their potential.

SÉRIE INVICTA NO MARACA

> Confira a tabela do Campeonato Brasileiro

Liverpool: Klopp must unleash his "dominant" gem alongside Bajcetic

There will have been a point, somewhere before the summer transfer window, that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp would have sat in a room, round a table, with some associates all wearing the same furrow-browed expression.

The Anfield side wasn't performing well. In fact, Liverpool were playing some pretty dire stuff, falling to heavy defeats and showing scarcely any sign of the once mighty outfit that secured silverware in abundance under the German manager's wing.

Change was paramount, and with James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all headed for the exit with their contracts set for expiry, the sapped midfield was clearly going to receive more than just a new lick of paint.

Help arrived in the form of a sweeping midfield rebuild, with Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister already cementing themselves as starring members.

Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch were also signed to help combat the sales of Fabinho and captain Jordan Henderson, who departed for the riches of the Saudi Pro League.

Last year, the Reds would ultimately fail to make the grade for the top four and missed out on an eighth successive year in Europe's elite club competition, now returning to the Europa League to claim the one trophy that has alluded Klopp during his Anfield odyssey.

How are Liverpool playing?

As The Times' Henry Winter put it, Liverpool were "really out of sorts" last season, and were it not for a return to form in the latter stages of the campaign, the club may well be plying their trade solely on English soil this term.

However, the Merseyside outfit have dazzled since the summer, wreaking devastation with their attacking prowess and currently riding a four-match win streak in the Premier League after drawing the opener against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Klopp looks to have unearthed the formula for high-octane success once more after toiling last year, and while unseating champions Manchester City from the Premier League throne – with Pep Guardiola's outfit searching for an unprecedented fourth successive title – there is evidence that the Reds can produce a lasting run of results to prove one of the fiercest competitors.

They haven't hit their zenith; far from it, in fact. Away victories over Newcastle United and Wolverhampton Wanderers were both emphatic and illustrated the winning mentality so intrinsic to this prestigious football club, but Liverpool fell behind on both occasions, also conceding first against Bournemouth at Anfield before winning that one 3-1.

With a trip against Austrian Bundesliga outfit LASK now forthcoming to commence the European campaign, Klopp's side will be hoping to continue their rich vein of form, though will likely do so with a much-changed starting eleven.

What is the Liverpool team news?

Trent Alexander Arnold has not quite recovered from a hamstring injury sustained against Aston Villa before the international break and will miss the clash, while Thiago Alcantara, who has not featured yet this season, is still not ready for an anticipated comeback.

Newly-appointed club captain Virgil van Dijk may also be involved after completing a suspension; rising star Jarell Quansah might be in line for a second consecutive start having impressed on his "phenomenal" – as was said by Alexander-Arnold – full debut against the Old Gold.

With a crucial home fixture in the league against West Ham United awaiting on Sunday, Klopp will definitely shake things up in Linz, with exciting summer signing Gravenberch sure to be itching for his starting debut after making a brief cameo last week.

How good is Ryan Gravenberch?

Joining from supreme German champions Bayern Munich in a £34m transfer on deadline day, Gravenberch ended a nightmarish spell in Bavaria that saw him earn just three league starts.

An immensely talented and multi-functional midfielder, Gravenberch was hailed as the "greatest talent" in the Netherlands by countryman and former Ajax striker Win Kieft, having excelled for de Godenzonen before joining Bayern, making 103 appearances and winning three Eredivisie titles.

The 11-cap Dutchman is both tenacious with his defensive work and artful in his creativity, also energetic and capable of working head to charge the midfield engine.

As per FBref, the 21-year-old ranks among the top 5% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions, the top 7% for successful take-ons, the top 18% for interceptions and the top 17% for progressive passes per 90.

Based on that evidence, there are discernible signs of a star in the making, and given Klopp's knack for shaping unrefined gems, he may well be a standout member of a prosperous Liverpool team in a few years.

It's a slow, arduous process, however, and the trip to LASK will provide the first brick of the foundation from which he can slowly build his career, with his technicality sure to leave him as the "dominant" – as he has been praised by former youth coach Brian Tevreden – force in the middle.

His all-encompassing arsenal could be perfect for Stefan Bajcetic too, with the precocious Spaniard yet to feature this season after impressing during his breakout year in 2022/23, cruelly curtailed by a long-term injury in March.

The midfielder, aged 18, has made the bench for the past four Premier League outings, but has not been selected for a second-half cameo as of yet.

He's clearly match fit though, and this is an apt opportunity to get him back up to speed, having been heralded for his youthful exuberance and being "so mature and composed for his age" by journalist Ben Bocsak.

A nimble, agile and energetic centre-midfielder, the former Celta Vigo youngster possesses a silky-smooth passing game married with a steely resolve in the centre, and Gravenberch's qualities would bounce off his smoothly.

Bayern Munich midfielder Ryan Gravenberch.

There will be tougher tests ahead than LASK this season, but that is not to say that Thomas Sageder's outfit cannot disrupt Liverpool and consign Klopp to a first seasonal defeat.

The 56-year-old will use the contest to provide certain stars with an opportunity to impress, and the robust Gravenberch and the delightful Bajcetic could unearth a partnership for the ages to continue the conversation that this Liverpool team is not only revitalised, but reformed and now ready to emulate the previous illustrious success under Klopp's management.

'Want to create Bangladesh brand of T20 cricket' – Mahmudullah

The stand-in captain admits his team does not have power-hitters, but they can compensate by taking calculated risks against vulnerable bowlers

Andrew Fidel Fernando13-Mar-2018Extraordinary wins can galvanise teams. Ask the India 1983 World Cup side, who had been 7 for 78 against Zimbabwe in Tunbridge Wells, before Kapil Dev struck 178 off 135 balls to post a score that proved just a little beyond the opposition. On the back of that victory India would win thrice more, famously beating a formidable West Indies side in the final.Or ask the Sri Lanka World T20 side of 2014. They had scored only 119 against New Zealand, and were on the brink of exiting the tournament. Then came the sublime spell from Rangana Herath; his 5 for 3 generating the wave of confidence that bore the team to the title. Now Bangladesh find themselves hoping they follow a similar trajectory. There are no world titles on offer in Sri Lanka, but for a side that over the past six months has been trounced in South Africa, lost their coach, and then were defeated across formats at home by the team that coach defected to, a resurgence is desired almost as desperately. Captain Mahmudullah was optimistic their superb chase of 215 will be a fresh start as Bangladesh hone in on a particular style of cricket from which sustained success could bloom.”We needed that win and the desire really drove everyone starting from the players, the support staff and team management,” he said. “We believe in our ability. We have taken a step in the right direction. Now we want to move on with the positives towards the next match.”Among the more remarkable features of Bangladesh’s chase against Sri Lanka was the top order’s reliance on timing, rather than power. Liton Das and Mushfiqur Rahim in particular were adept at harnessing the pace on the ball for their own ends, while the likes of Soumya Sarkar played restrained innings, even with the required rate consistently north of 10. That approach is a blueprint for further batting success, said Mahmudullah.”We spoke about creating a Bangladesh brand of T20 cricket ahead of this tour. We need to be smart to take calculative risk – particularly when taking on a bowler. This will give us the edge. We don’t have the power hitters, which we need to address – but we need to be smart to carry out our skills.”If Saturday’s batting excellence is to be a catalyst for resurgence, Bangladesh know their bowling must quickly shape up. Although there were hints in the match against Sri Lanka that Mustafizur Rahman was returning to form – his cutters began to yield better results – he was nevertheless expensive, conceding 48 runs from his four overs. The trick, perhaps, would be to bank on spin and slower balls, Mahmudullah said.”The wicket suits the batsmen more, but Indian bowlers are taking pace off the ball, which is something even we can try to do. You must have seen that when the spinners Nazmul Islam and Mehidy Hasan were bowling in the last game, there was a span of 20-odd balls when they stopped the boundaries. But I still feel we have to step up our efforts, which I feel our bowlers can do.”
