Cook taking Test career on 'game-by-game basis'

‘Not many people play 150 Test matches’ – Cook

Alastair Cook is refusing to look beyond the next game as he prepares for his record-breaking 150th Test.Cook, England’s record Test run-scorer, will on Thursday become the first England player – and the eighth man from any nation – to appear in 150 Tests. But while Cook insisted those who have suggested he was on the verge of retirement (the likes of Kevin Pietersen and Mitchell Johnson) did so from a position of ignorance – “they have no contact time with me” – he did admit he had “no idea” whether this Ashes campaign could prove to be his final Test series. All of which did little to quell the rising tide of speculation that suggests Cook could be tiring of the demands of a life as an international cricketer. And while he points to the extra training sessions he is taking as proof of his enduring ambition, he did hint that a decision about his future could be taken by the selectors unless he is able to rediscover his form with the bat.Cook has never been dropped from the Test team but the scars of losing the ODI captaincy at the end of 2014 are still apparent.”At the moment, I’m very much taking things on a game-by-game basis,” Cook said ahead of the third Test at the WACA. “I’m trying to score runs, trying to set up England wins.”Could it be my last series? I’ve no idea. And I’ve said that since I gave up the captaincy. Things change incredibly quickly. I was taught a lesson in 2014 with that World Cup. In the morning I was expecting to lead England in that World Cup and in the afternoon I got a phone call saying they didn’t want me to do it. And that was an hour after a meeting when they said they wanted me to, so you end up living on the edge in professional cricket.”I wouldn’t be going to do extra gym sessions or the extra batting behind closed doors if I wasn’t keen on carrying on. The people who are saying that [I’m finished] have had no contact time with me. They wouldn’t know the extra nets I’ve been having behind closed doors. I was with the batting coach Gary Palmer for an hour-and-a-half yesterday morning desperately trying to keep working at my game. That’s probably not a guy who’s given in.”It doesn’t get any easier. I think I said before that it doesn’t matter what you’ve done before, you still go out on nought every time you bat. That’s why it’s called Test cricket. It’s meant to be hard. I’m not saying I’m absolutely flying here, because you only fly when you’re really scoring runs.”If you’re scoring runs all the time your place is guaranteed and if you don’t there are plenty of other people who want your place so that hasn’t changed. That hasn’t changed in my 12 years and it won’t change in the next 20 years. People want your place and it’s up to me to score runs to get those people off my back. It’s just judged on results.”He did, he admits, lose a little of the drive required to lead the side at the end of 2016 but says he has enjoyed the transition back into the ranks.Alastair Cook lines one up in the nets•Getty Images

“I did my stint doing the best job in the world,” he said. “And at that time, I’d run out of that motivation to really drive this side on. In that last year, we lost too many games of cricket for a side that talented. So I probably felt as if I wasn’t doing my job well enough to drive that team forward and didn’t quite have the energy that job needed.”I’ve really enjoyed the last 12 months, with Essex obviously winning the County Championship and with England winning the last two series. We’ve got the biggest game of our lives coming up now, and we’ve got to scrap unbelievably hard for the five days.”It is, Cook says, the fact that he has played so many consecutive games (this match will be his 148th in succession; only Allan Border, with 153, can claim more) that provides most cause for pride. It is a record that demonstrates consistency, sustained fitness and a good relationship with the England management who have ensured he has been extended patience during the lean days. There have been a few of those, too. And, while is he keen to remind us that it is only four Tests since he made a double-century at Edgbaston, he is in something of a lean run now. That Edgbaston effort is his only hundred in his last 25 Test innings and he has not reached 40 in the eight innings since it.”Clearly I’d like to score more runs,” he said. “My job at the top of the order, and it has been since 2006, is to try to get England off to a good start and on this tour I have struggled. I thought in Adelaide I played a bit better. Four games ago I got a double hundred. So it’s amazing how the cycle of the world goes. I’m not going to sit here and say I’m setting the world alight but you get through that first hour as a batter and you try to get a big one. That doesn’t change.”I probably didn’t think I would be here when I turned up in Nagpur [for his Test debut] all those years ago. It’s obviously a very special moment in terms of a personal milestone. Not many people play 150 Test matches so to do that and do it at the top of the order, I’m quite proud of that.”It is a very special thing to pull on that cap. It’s a special thing to walk out and play for England. And that’s why I love doing it. Hopefully there can be a few more.”

West Ham Could Still Sign 25-Year-Old Striker This Summer

West Ham United's summer pursuit of Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke has been much-publicised of late and a new update suggests they could still get their man.

Do West Ham want to sign Dominic Solanke?

The 25-year-old has really matured as a footballer in recent years, not quite making the grade at Liverpool as a youngster, but excelling for Bournemouth as time has passed.

Last season, Solanke scored six goals and registered seven assists in the Premier League, having netted an incredible 29 times in the Championship the previous year in Bournemouth's promotion campaign, and he has one in three games this time around, which actually came against West Ham on the opening weekend.

The Hammers have been strongly linked with a move for the Englishman before the summer transfer window ends on Friday night, seeing him as someone who can come in and provide competition for Michail Antonio, with the veteran attacker in a rich vein of form at the moment, scoring twice in three league games in 2023/24.

Now, a new update has emerged regarding West Ham's hopes of signing Solanke – one that suggests they could still strike a deal before the window slams shut later this week.

Dominic-Solanke-Bournemouth

What's the latest on Dominic Solanke to West Ham?

According to an update from Football Insider, West Ham had scouts watching Solanke in action against Tottenham on Saturday afternoon, suggesting a late-summer move for him could still be on the cards:

"West Ham talent spotters watched Dominic Solanke in action for Bournemouth on Saturday, sources have told Football Insider. The Irons are keeping close tabs on the striker, 25, as they work on signing a centre-forward before the window shuts.

"West Ham scouts assessed Solanke against Liverpool the previous weekend and then once again in Saturday’s 2-0 home defeat to Tottenham."

Solanke could be just what West Ham are looking for this summer, at a time when things are looking hugely exciting, having racked up seven points from their opening three matches.

That includes highly impressive wins at home to Chelsea and away to Brighton, with the east Londoners spending the Declan Rice money wisely by bringing in the likes of Edson Alvarez, James Ward-Prowse and Mohammed Kudus.

In Solanke, West Ham could have the ideal person to come in and add squad depth, quality and goals to their attack, and while he may not find it easy to oust Antonio immediately, he could be a great long-term replacement for him.

The former Liverpool man possesses similar attributes to the current Hammers star, in terms of physical presence, pace and finishing ability, and Frank Lampard hailed him as a "high talent" earlier this year. Meanwhile, Gary O'Neil described him as an "absolutely massive" player for him during his time as Bournemouth manager.

Building a great squad has to be the aim for West Ham, with the huge money received for Rice's signature helping with that, and if Solanke could arrive before Friday's cutoff, it would feel like another significant piece of business, giving David Moyes' side the firepower to mount a genuine European push in the Premier League this season.

Time ficou no lucro?
Não comemoro nada como se fosse lucro. O que me preocupa e me deixa irritado é que o time teve a chance de ganhar o jogo.

Poupar sábado, contra o Santos, pensando no jogo contra o River?

Can punch-drunk Sri Lanka find some festive cheer?

With the series in the bag, India might consider handing a T20I debut to Tamil Nadu allrounder Washington Sundar or Baroda allrounder Deepak Hooda

Dasgupta: India should look to give youngsters a chance

Big pictureSri Lanka keep offering gifts this festive season, and India keep lapping it up. Their bowlers regularly send down half-volleys and half-trackers, wrapped up in ribbons. Their batting line-up continues to suffer rapid collapses. And their fielders keep missing chances. The only gift Sri Lanka have received in return was a spring-loaded boxing glove from an under-strength Indian side. Can Thisara Perera and his men end the tour with something to cheer? To do that they need to first figure out the right combination, and Angelo Mathews getting injured can’t have helped. In the first T20I, they went for four batsmen, three seam-bowling allrounders and four bowlers, and suffered their worst loss in the format. In the second match, they brought in an extra batsman in Sadeera Samarawickrama for a frontline seamer in Vishwa Fernando, but still lost 9 for 27 in 25 balls. With the series in the bag, India might consider handing a T20I debut to 18-year-old Tamil Nadu allrounder Washington Sundar or Baroda allrounder Deepak Hooda. Celtic: Rodgers heading for deadline day transfer howler

An update has emerged on Celtic and their plans to make further additions to the playing squad before the summer transfer window officially slams shut tonight.

What's the latest Celtic transfer news?

According to the Daily Record, the Hoops are considering a late move to sign free-agent left-back Ryan Bertrand to bolster their defensive options.

The report claims that the Scottish giants have been offered the chance to snap up the former England international as Brendan Rodgers, who worked with him at Leicester City, is keen to bring in another player in that position to compete with Alexandro Bernabei and Greg Taylor.

He has been without a club since the end of the 2022/23 campaign as his contract at the King Power expired over the summer and this means that the Bhoys could complete a move after deadline day as they do not have to register him from another team.

How good is Ryan Bertrand?

The 34-year-old veteran has endured a rough few years and Rodgers appears to be heading for a first howler of his second stint in charge of the Scottish side by considering a move for him.

Bertrand has not made any competitive appearances for a club since the 2021/22 campaign and has only featured in 11 matches since the end of the 2020/21 season.

Former Leicester defender Ryan Bertrand.

This means that he would arrive at Parkhead with a startling lack of match fitness and may not even be available as a viable option for a number of weeks due to his lack of action over the last two years.

He had knee surgery in February 2022 and is yet to play a game since that operation, which also suggests that there could be an injury concern with the English defender as there is no telling how the experienced defender's body will react to playing competitive football again after such a long absence.

This is without taking into account that Bertrand's performances were less than impressive prior to that blow. He averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.45 and lost 64% of his duels across four Premier League outings during the 2021/22 campaign.

Bertrand also averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.66 over 29 starts and lost 59% of his aerial contests in the English top flight for Southampton during the previous term.

During the 2022/23 campaign, 26 Celtic players achieved Sofascore ratings of 6.73 or higher and this suggests that the free-agent could be one of the worst options within Rodgers' squad if they decide to bring him in.

The 5 foot 10 dud, who was once criticised for his "poor" defending by pundit Robbie Savage, would also be a disappointing alternative to reported transfer target Quentin Merlin, who plays in the same position at left-back for Nantes.

Last season, the France U21 international averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.92 across 24 Ligue 1 appearances as he won 54% of his duels and created seven 'big chances' for his teammates from full-back, suggesting he is a better all round package.

Instead of bringing in a frontline option who could compete with Taylor and Bernabei, which is what Merlin could have been, Rodgers would be signing a dud whose statistics and fitness record in recent years suggests that it would not be a worthwhile investment.

Sri Lanka's rare chance to cap successful tour

In five matches against Sri Lanka, Bangladesh have lost four and drawn one, but Sunday is their last chance to restore a degree of respectability to the affair

The Preview by Andrew Fidel Fernando17-Feb-2018

Associated Press

Big PictureIt had begun so well. Bangladesh may still have been stinging from Chandika Hathurusingha’s surprise exit, but in the first three matches of the tri-nations ODI series, they stomped both oppositions, and appeared as if no side was capable of so much as challenging them in home conditions. Then came the 10-wicket thumping in Mirpur. Since then, in five matches against Sri Lanka (across formats), Bangladesh have lost four and drawn one. The absence of Shakib Al Hasan – due to injury – has been telling.Sunday’s T20 is their last chance to restore a degree of respectability to the affair. With Tamim Iqbal set to return to the top of the order after missing Thursday’s game, and the top order firing in any case, the batting appears to be stable. Much will depend on how a young, largely inexperienced Bangladesh attack can contend with a suddenly-confident Sri Lanka batting order. On Thursday, the visitors ran down Bangladesh’s highest-ever T20 score inside 17 overs. Sri Lanka are not a world-beating limited-overs side yet, though. There are holes in their batting order – Bangladesh must only work out how to exploit them. For the visitors, the pressure is off. They have already performed better on this tour than expected, especially as they had begun the trip with a loss to Zimbabwe. A victory to seal the T20 series would be further indication that Hathurusingha is setting the side back on track. Tougher examinations await, but with Sri Lanka snapping an eight-match T20 losing streak on Thursday, early signs appear healthy.Form guideBangladeshLLLWL (last five completed matches, most recent first)
Sri Lanka WLLLLIn the spotlightMushfiqur Rahim has had a modest tour. In 10 innings going back to the start of the tri-series, he has only crossed fifty three times. As his 66 off 44 on Thursday demonstrated, however, Bangladesh’s batting appears exponentially stronger when he is productive. He had, in fact, been one of the primary contributors to Bangladesh’s excellent tour of Sri Lanka last year. In the continued absence of Shakib, Bangladesh will look to Mushfiqur to carry the middle order again on Sunday.Associated Press

In the ODI series Kusal Mendis had been unconvincing, but he batted himself into form on a flat Chittagong Test-match pitch, and has now produced his first outstanding T20 innings, hitting 53 off 27 balls on Thursday. Few would have picked him for an opener, but that is a role he has flourished in over the past few weeks. Prior to his injury, Kusal Perera had probably been slated to open alongside Danushka Gunathilaka, but if Mendis produces another good innings on Sunday, he will probably keep that position in the Nidahas Trophy next month.Team newsTamim’s return to fitness is the good news for Bangladesh. Zakir Hasan is likely to make way for him in the opening slot. Sabbir Rahman’s continued poor form could see him make room for Mohammad Mithun, while Abu Jayed and Mahedi Hasan could also get chances by replacing Mohammad Saifuddin and Rubel Hossain.Bangladesh (probable): 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Soumya Sarkar, 3 Mushfiqur Rahim, 4 Mohammad Mithun/Sabbir Rahman, 5 Afif Hossain, 6 Mahmudullah, 7 Ariful Haque, 8 Mahedi Hasan/Mohammad Saifuddin, 9 Nazmul Islam, 10 Mustafizur Rahman, 11 Rubel Hossain/Abu JayedSri Lanka are likely to field the same XI, though perhaps it is possible that Asitha Fernando will come in for Shehan Madushanka.Sri Lanka (probable): 1 Danushka Gunathilaka, 2 Kusal Mendis, 3 Upul Tharanga, 4 Dasun Shanaka, 5 Niroshan Dickwella (wk), 6 Thisara Perera, 7 Dinesh Chandimal (capt.), 8 Jeevan Mendis, 9 Akila Dananjaya, 10 Isuru Udana, 11 Shehan MadushankaPitch and conditionsThe picturesque Sylhet ground has batting-friendly pitches, as was evident during the BPL. In four evening games last year, the ground averaged 174 for sides batting first in the domestic T20 tournament. The weather in Sylhet will be significantly cooler after sunset.Stats and trivia Before Thursday, Kusal Mendis’ highest T20 international score had been 22. He did not make double figures in five of his previous eight innings. Mushfiqur Rahim is two dismissals away from completing 50 in T20 internationals. West Ham: Pellegrini signing saw his value plummet by £25m at London Stadium

West Ham United have tried and failed on a number of occasions to find a star number nine to lead the line and consistently fire in goals at Premier League level over the years.

In January 2017, The Guardian pointed out that David Sullivan and David Gold had brought in 32 strikers during their seven-year stint as owners of the club, at that point, and they had managed a combined 128 goals in 643 matches in all competitions.

How much did West Ham sign Haller for?

The Hammers splashed the cash in an attempt to end their striker curse in the summer of 2019 as Haller was brought in from Eintracht Frankfurt for a club-record £45m but they ended up having a mare with the Ivory Coast international.

West Ham's five most-expensive number nine signings (excluding Haller):

Manuel Pellegrini and the club must have been confident that the French-born centre-forward had the requisite quality to be a huge success at the London Stadium as they were willing to spend a record transfer fee to secure his services from the German club.

Why did West Ham sign Haller?

The Premier League side snapped him up after he enjoyed two impressive seasons with Frankfurt in front of goal after his move to the club from FC Utrecht in 2017.

He produced 13 goals and seven assists in 36 matches in all competitions throughout his debut campaign, which included nine goals and four assists in 31 Bundesliga matches.

Haller followed that up with 20 goals and 12 assists in 41 games for Frankfurt during the 2018/19 season, which included 15 goals and nine assists in 29 outings in the German top-flight.

The 6 foot 3 finisher only missed 13 'big chances' in total – to go along with his 24 goals – across the two Bundesliga terms as he rarely spurned good opportunities in front of goal.

His form in Germany came after a prolific spell in the Netherlands with FC Utrecht. The excellent marksman racked up an eye-catching 51 goals and 16 assists in 98 matches for the Dutch side – more than one strike every other game.

Interestingly, Haller came close to sealing a move to another Premier League club in January 2016 as Norwich City reportedly agreed a £6.5m deal with Utrecht for the young number nine.

However, the player decided against a switch to Norfolk despite traveling over for a medical and ended up staying in Holland before his transfer to Frankfurt 18 months later.

How many goals did Haller score for West Ham?

Haller's exceptional form for Frankfurt and Utrecht convinced Pellegrini and West Ham to make him the most expensive signing in the club's history but he was unable to live up to the hype.

The towering forward scored 14 goals in 54 matches for the Hammers in all competitions as he failed to offer a consistent goal threat that befitted his price tag and his performances in Germany and the Netherlands.

He scored seven goals and assisted one in 32 Premier League games during his debut campaign in England during the 2019/20 season. In that time, Haller only completed 66% of his attempted passes and lost 52% of his duels, as per Sofascore, as he struggled to be a reliable outlet at the top end of the pitch.

The Ivorian finisher followed that up with three goals and zero assists across 16 appearances in the English top-flight throughout the 2020/21 term. He averaged a pass success rate of just 64% and lost 56% of his physical contests in those matches, as per Sofascore.

No outfield player with at least one Premier League start for West Ham completed a lower percentage of their passes than Haller did throughout the first-half of the 2020/21 campaign.

This shows that the former Frankfurt star struggled badly in general play as he gave the ball away far too frequently whilst not making up for it by being a prolific scorer in the final third.

How much did West Ham sell Haller for?

West Ham eventually decided to part ways with the £45m addition in January of 2021, after 18 months at the club, for a reported fee of £20m as Ajax swooped in to secure his services.

This means that the Pellegrini signing's value plummeted by a staggering £25m in less than two years at the London Stadium as his less-than-impressive Premier League performers did not allow them to recoup anywhere near the club-record fee that they spent to sign him in the summer of 2019.

Therefore, the former Hammers boss and the club had a huge mare with their swoop to sign the 6 foot 3 titan from Frankfurt as he ended up being a big flop with his lack of goals and decreasing value.

Where is Haller now?

Haller has, however, revived his career since moving away from England. The giant striker became an instant star at Ajax as he produced 11 goals and five assists in his first 19 Eredivisie appearances for the Dutch giants.

His impressive form continued throughout his spell with the club as the French-born ace ended his time there with 47 goals and 16 assists in 66 outings in all competitions.

That led to a reported €34.5m (£29.6m) transfer to German side Borussia Dortmund in 2022 and the ex-West Ham flop has amassed 11 strikes and five assists in 26 games for them in all competitions to date.

These statistics show that the 29-year-old marksman, who was once described as a "handful" by former Aston Villa head coach Dean Smith, has the quality to be a lethal and consistent goalscorer at the top level.

He has proven himself at four different clubs in Germany and the Netherlands but was not able to showcase the best of his abilities in England, whether that was down to the team around him or a struggle to adapt to life in English football.

Either way, West Ham had a mare with the £45m club-record signing as they made a staggering £25m loss on him within the space of 18 months and did not get much back in the way of goals on the pitch.
