Gabriel strikes back on Younis' record day

Younis Khan became the first Pakistan batsman to make 10,000 Test runs, adding 131 with Babar Azam, before late strikes by Shannon Gabriel evened up the opening Test

The Report by Danyal Rasool23-Apr-2017
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsYounis Khan and Babar Azam added 131 for the third wicket•AFP

It sometimes felt as if the sole purpose for playing this Test match was to provide Younis Khan a platform to score the 23 runs he has needed to become the first Pakistan cricketer to score 10,000 runs. If that was indeed the case, then the purpose had been served. Younis swept – of course he swept – to the fine-leg boundary to reach the milestone, and the wait was over.It happened two balls after the tea interval. Younis had, of course, left us all hanging at the break with his career runs tally reading 9999, and for perhaps 15 minutes, it was a figure almost as famous in cricket as 99.94. But then after two balls (although really after 70 years), it happened. The newest addition to the 10,000-run club took off his helmet and set off for the tiny cluster of Pakistan fans huddled together. He raised his bat, pointed at the Pakistan crest on his shirt and set to work on what he knew best: batting in Test match cricket. There was almost a palpable sense that a burden had been lifted, and Pakistan’s scoring rate picked up sharply after that. The West Indies pacemen had tired themselves out, and the spin bowlers – Devendra Bishoo excepted – were child’s play for the pair to handle. Having come through a cagey second session, Younis and Babar Azam tucked into Roston Chase and Kraigg Brathwaite, during a stand of 131 for the third wicket, a six into the second tier by Younis the shot of the day.Jason Holder was forced to return to the quicks once again, and called upon Shannon Gabriel to do something about a match that was slipping away from his side. The move paid off almost immediately. In just Gabriel’s second over back, Younis, who had perhaps relaxed a bit too much, failed to keep an attempted cover drive along the ground, spooning it straight to Brathwaite at short extra cover. It wasn’t before Younis had scored a valuable 58, though, putting his side in control of an innings that had been quivering at 54 for 2 when he came in.Gabriel wasn’t done, however, accounting for Babar in his next over, the young batsman playing on to his stumps after making a composed 72 off 201 deliveries as a seesawing Test began to even up again. The new batsmen, Misbah-ul-Haq and Asad Shafiq, simply shut up shop thereafter as the quicks continued to push for another wicket in fading light. But the pair, nothing if not defensively resolute, held on till the close of play, Misbah surviving a review off what turned out to be the last ball of the day, setting the game up for an intriguing last couple of days. The day had started with Mohammad Amir wrapping up the home side’s innings, which had stretched on interminably owing to a combination of uncooperative weather and a wagging tail. They came out nine wickets down, and Amir needed just nine deliveries to account for Gabriel. It was almost a replica of the ball that did for Alzarri Joseph yesterday, angling in to Gabriel from around the wicket to crash into the middle stump and giving Amir his career-best bowling figures of 6 for 44.Pakistan were dealt an early blow when Azhar Ali, indisputably their best batsmen of late, fell to a short wide delivery from Joseph that he will rue flashing at. It caught the edge and Shane Dowrich took a smart catch behind the wicket, but from Pakistan’s point of view it will have felt like a wicket gifted. Ahmed Shahzad struck some confident boundaries on his return to the Test side but fell soon after, as a Holder delivery nipped in late to strike him on the back leg, bringing Younis and Babar together. The pair hung around gamely in the face of a disciplined West Indian attack, ensuring they went in to tea having suffered no more setbacks. It took Younis 48 minutes and ten overs across two sessions to so much as get off the mark as the pace bowlers employed a consistent off-stump line and good length in otherwise unhelpful bowling conditions. Babar and Younis were equal to it, not about to throw their wickets away playing false shots, and consequently the session took on the feel of a stalemate. However, with Gabriel’s late intervention taking the advantage away from Pakistan, the crowning glory is still very much up for grabs.

Bayern Munich Hold Harry Kane Meeting With Spurs

Bayern Munich have made "important contact" with Tottenham Hotspur over a move for Harry Kane and have no intention of giving up their pursuit of the centre-forward, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Is Kane joining Bayern?

Having seen two bids rebuffed already in their hunt for Kane, Bayern are showing no signs of dropping their interest in the England forward.

Kane wants a move to the German champions and as long as that remains the case, Spurs are going to find it difficult to keep the 29-year-old in north London amid Bayern interest.

However, Tottenham, and most significantly Daniel Levy, know the drill by now. They have been here many times before with Kane's future the subject of focus every single time the transfer window rolls around.

This time it may be tougher to halt Kane's exit with Romano claiming that Bayern have no intention of stopping their pursuit of the attacker having made "important contact" with Spurs over a deal.

Speaking on his Here We Go podcast, Romano said: "We can confirm what has been reported tonight, so there was a very important contact today between Bayern and Tottenham to discuss about Harry Kane.

"This is important because Bayern are trying their best. This is very clear. They offered €70m plus add-ons almost 20 days ago, rejected. Then €80m plus add-ons, also rejected by Tottenham. The message from Tottenham has always been clear: they will fight to keep Harry Kane at the club. They want to offer him a new deal.

"Ange Postecoglou is trying to convince the player about the project by speaking to him directly at the training ground, but Bayern are still trying. Thomas Tuchel is behind this story because Tuchel is really pushing to have Harry Kane and Bayern and Tottenham had a conversation. At the moment, it's still not something like a done deal, an agreement."

He added: "Bayern told in a very clear way to Tottenham that they don't have an intention to stop. They want Harry Kane and they want to try again. So, the feeling of sources is that Bayern tried to explore the real conditions from Daniel Levy to sign Harry Kane."

Bayern's persistence may prove increasingly difficult for Levy to resist as Kane's contract expires next summer and he is keen on a move to Bavaria.

However, losing such a talismanic and significant figure would massively disrupt Postecoglou's rebuild and leave the Lilywhites with an uncertain season ahead of them without Kane's consistent goals.

Kane netted 30 times in 38 Premier League games despite Tottenham's lacklustre performances and eighth-placed finish, and Spurs have been indebted to him for saving their skin countless times in recent seasons.

Who are Tottenham signing?

Kane's exit will be of huge concern to Tottenham supporters, but they can be extremely satisfied with the business they have already conducted in the window.

James Maddison, Guglielmo Vicario and Manor Solomon have all arrived at Hotspur Way, while the loans of Pedro Porro and Dejan Kulusevski have been made permanent.

While any new signings may be influenced by potential outgoings, there is a sense that Postecoglou is nowhere near done in the market.

Priority for the time being is a new centre-back, with Edmond Tapsoba and Micky van de Ven top of the club's list of targets. The Bundesliga pair would both help solidify a leaky defence and offer Postecoglou a central defender that is comfortable playing out from the back.

If Kane were to leave then Spurs would obviously require a ready-made replacement and someone they could potentially invest in is Napoli forward Victor Osimhen, although the striker would likely cost an absolute fortune.

Aston Villa: Villans Increase Offer For Moussa Diaby

Aston Villa have reportedly raised their offer for Bayer Leverkusen winger Moussa Diaby, looking to snap him up for €50m (£42.9m) this summer.

Are Aston Villa signing Moussa Diaby?

The 24-year-old has emerged as one of Villa's primary summer transfer targets currently, in a window that has already seen some impressive progress made. Youri Tielemans and Pau Torres have both arrived at the club, with the pair seen as additions who could significantly strengthen the midfield and defence respectively.

Diaby is a wide player who has caught the eye for Leverkusen since arriving from Paris Saint-Germain back in 2019, scoring 49 goals and adding 48 assists in 172 appearances for his current club. In 2022/23, he registered 17 goal contributions (nine goals and eight assists) in 33 Bundesliga matches, and he increasingly feels like a footballer heading towards the peak years of his career.

Villa are yet to come to an agreement with Leverkusen to secure the services of the Frenchman, with their valuation for the player not being met. There is also interest from Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr, so it may not be easy for NSWE to get their man.

A new update has now emerged regarding Diaby's future, however, and it is one that could give Villans supporters some hope about a deal being agreed.

Moussa Diaby

What's the latest on Moussa Diaby to Aston Villa?

According to Bild [via Sport Witness], both Villa and Al Nassr have increased their offer for Diaby's services to £42.9m. The player wants a move to the Premier League, but Leverkusen remain desperate to keep hold of him.

It "remains to be seen" if any business can be completed before Unai Emery's side head off on their pre-season tour this summer, with the German side potentially holding out for as much as €60m (£51.5m).

It is encouraging to see Villa upping their offer for Diaby, further suggesting that they see him as one of their main transfer targets ahead of the new season. Funds have been made available by NSWE this summer and the club is showing real ambition in the market, and the Leverkusen star could be the next brilliant signing.

He is a nine-cap France international, which is no mean feat, in an era where Les Bleus have so many world-class attacking players at their disposal, with Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes calling him "an extremely fast, technically strong striker whose qualities suit our game down to the ground".

Used most predominantly as a right-sided forward, Diaby is a versatile footballer who can also shine centrally and on the opposite flank, which is sure to appeal to Emery, as he looks to bring in flexible players who can interchange with others in attack, linking with Ollie Watkins in the process.

Leverkusen are clearly going to take some budging – their reluctance to sell Diaby highlights what a talented individual he is – but if Villa can get a deal over the line in the new few weeks, it could be a signing that proves to be as important to the attack as Tielemans and Torres could be in their respective positions.

Kalra: Difficult pill to swallow for Nair

Allrounder Hardik Pandya has been selected for the three-Test series in Sri Lanka, which begins on July 26 in Galle. KL Rahul, who hasn’t played any competitive cricket since India’s Test series against Australia in March because of injury, was back in the squad. M Vijay, too, regained fitness, after wrist and shoulder injuries, and was named in the squad.Rohit Sharma made his Test comeback, too, after being rested for the limited-overs tour of the West Indies. He last played Tests for India during the New Zealand series in October last year, before injuring himself while playing an ODI. His replacement Karun Nair, who scored a triple century against England in December 2016 but made 54 in four innings after that, was left out.Abhinav Mukund, who got one Test in the home season, edged out Shikhar Dhawan as back-up opener, despite the latter’s success in limited-overs formats after his return in the Champions Trophy. Abhinav, however, is also a part of the India A squad for the four-day matches on the tour of South Africa in July – August and his availability for the A tour could be in doubt. The Test series in Sri Lanka is scheduled to end on August 16, while the four-day games in South Africa begin from August 12. Nair will lead the India A side in the four-day matches against South Africa A.Pandya’s maiden call-up to the Test side came in November last year for the home series against England. However, he hurt his right shoulder while training later that month and was withdrawn from the squad. Pandya found himself in the Test squad again for the first two matches against Australia later this year. The bowling chose itself with the two best bowlers in the world – R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja – being bolstered by the presence of Kuldeep Yadav. The four specialist quicks were Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav.India also announced a two-day warm-up match to be played in Colombo on July 21 and 22.India squad: Virat Kohli (capt.), M Vijay, KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Kuldeep Yadav, Abhinav Mukund.

Rangers Have Shown An Interest In "Agile" Teen Starlet

Glasgow Rangers will start the 2023/24 season with a totally different look from how they finished the previous campaign.

Seven players have already been signed by Michael Beale and with moves for Danilo and Jose Cifuentes edging closer, it could be nine new arrivals by the time the Premiership season kicks off in just over a week.

Who will Rangers sign next?

With his business close to being completed, the Gers have been linked with a move for 19-year-old Dembo Saidykhan this summer, although the club could face some competition from the likes of Southampton and Toulouse for his signature.

Beale has signed just two defenders, Dujon Sterling and Leon Balogun, so another centre-back is a must in order to boost the squad depth ahead of a hectic schedule which could see the Ibrox side play in four competitions should they qualify for the Champions League group stages.

A move for Arsenal defender Auston Trusty appears to have gone cold as talks have stalled while Jonathan Panzo has also been linked with a move to Glasgow, but nothing has materialised yet.

Beale could perhaps sign the wildcard option that is Saidykhan, and he could forge a solid future defensive duo alongside young Ibrox talent Leon King.

Who is Dembo Saidykhan?

There is no doubt a young talent can make their mark at Rangers, especially considering King’s rapid ascent from academy prospect to securing regular first-team football during the first half of last season.

The 19-year-old played 23 senior matches during 2022/23, with six coming in the Champions League, and he was even ranked third across the squad for tackles per game (1.7) and fifth for clearances per game (two) in Europe’s premier club competition.

This clearly suggests that despite his lack of experience, he has the talent to become a mainstay in a few years.

Saidykhan could perhaps become his ideal defensive partner, notably shining recently for the Gambia at the U20 World Cup.

Glasgow Rangers defenders Leon King and Connor Goldson.

Not only was he the seventh-best performer for his nation via overall Sofascore rating (7.05), but the defender showcased his passing ability, ranking fourth for accurate passes per game (45.8), suggesting that he is able to comfortably pass the ball from the defence and begin regular attacks.

Having also made 1.5 tackles and one interception per game, there is also nothing wrong with the 6 ft 1 titan's defensive ability as these numbers ranked him as the third-best defender across both metrics in the squad.

He was hailed as “agile” by journalist Hernan Federico Pacheco following his displays at the aforementioned tournament and these have clearly put him on the map in terms of a potential move to Europe.

Although he may not make inroads straight away, there is no doubt Beale is looking at finding talented youngsters and luring them to the Light Blues as he bids to lower the average age of his squad.

It could take a while, but a central defensive partnership consisting of King and Saidykhan may well be the norm at Ibrox in a few years.

Everton Could Repeat Iwobi Deal By Signing £10m Sensation

Everton are yet to really get going in the transfer market as manager Sean Dyche looks to build his team and veer away from the relegation threat that has plagued the club over the past two seasons, though Kelechi Iheanacho is now being targetting to bolster the ranks.

Who wants to sign Kelechi Iheanacho?

According to Football Transfers, the Nigerian forward is admired by the Toffees hierarchy and could be approached over the coming weeks to provide the misfiring frontline with some new firepower, but only in the event that prime target El Bilal Toure would reject the Goodison Park side.

Well, as it goes, the Almeria striker is reportedly closing in on a transfer to Atalanta to replace Rasmus Hojlund, who is being pursued by Manchester United, which paves the way for Iheanacho's move to Merseyside.

The Foxes forward, aged 26, is expected to cost around £10m to be prised away from the King Power Stadium, and given Everton's tough time in front of goal – the Blues only outscored Wolverhampton Wanderers last term – Iheanacho could be the answer.

How good is Kelechi Iheanacho?

Described as an "excellent" attacker by his former manager Brendan Rodgers, Iheanacho would significantly boost the Toffees' frontal firepower.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is a fine player, but alas finds the medical department his stomping ground all too often, while Neal Maupay yields one solitary goal one year on from his £15m move from Brighton & Hove Albion.

Iheanacho is not quite the household name certain segments of the Everton support may covet, but he is a dependable striker with a wealth of experience and a consistent goal-scoring record, having plundered 88 direct contributions from 206 matches for Leicester after arriving from Manchester City, where he scored 21 goals from 64 matches.

Having won the FA Cup with his current club and the League Cup with the Citizens, the 45-cap international also boasts the winning mentality that could be instilled across the Blues ranks, something in short supply after a miserable two years that have indeed threatened the preservation of the side's top-flight status.

Iheanacho could emulate his compatriot Alex Iwobi with a move to Merseyside, the dynamic midfielder leaving Arsenal and penning a deal worth £34m in 2018, and thrive under Dyche's wing as he forges a path to success.

Leicester City's KelechiIheanachocelebrates scoring their first goal

Iwobi ranks among the top 14% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 15% for progressive carries and the top 14% for successful take-ons per 90, as per FBref, and could meld very nicely with a player he knows well from international exploits with Nigeria.

Iheanacho, comparatively, ranks among the top 2% of forwards for assists, the top 13% for progressive carries and the top 9% for successful take-ons per 90, and having scored five goals from just 11 league starts last term as Leicester plummeted into the second tier, he could be the dynamic component missing from Dyche's system.

With Arnaut Danjuma also signing for Goodison on loan this summer, Iheanacho could be the astute purchase to complete the attacking ranks and ensure that the increments are made to navigate away from the instability that the club have been mired in of recent years.
