Leeds Unlikely To Be Able To Get Managerial Duo

Leeds United are unlikely to bring in either Brendan Rodgers or Graham Potter as their new manager this summer, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

Who has been linked with Leeds job?

The Whites ended up getting through three managers during the 2022/23 season, with Jesse Marsch eventually replaced by Javi Gracia, as his reign got progressively worse.

The Spaniard fared no better, however, and with Leeds spinning towards the Championship under him, Sam Allardyce was brought in to mastermind a recovery act. He didn't have long enough to make his presence felt, however, and he left the club last week after the Whites were relegated from the Premier League.

Those high up at Elland Road are now looking to nail the next managerial appointment this summer, with a number of individuals already linked with the vacant job.

Two of those are Rodgers and Potter, both of whom were sacked by Leicester City and Chelsea respectively earlier in the campaign, but are still considered good British coaches.

Graham Potter

Are Rodgers and Potter unlikely to join?

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jacobs admitted that Rodgers and Potter are unlikely to want to head into the Championship, given their current respective statuses in the game:

"We're going to see other candidates linked, like Graham Potter and Brendan Rodgers, but I sense these are names that were being discussed when Leeds were still in the Premier League with a chance of safety.

"I think the likes of Rodgers and Potter can get quite big Premier League jobs still. Leeds are a big club, so if they were in the Premier League, maybe in the off-season and with new owners that would have been of appeal. But I would be surprised if Potter or Rodgers personally considered dropping down into the Championship."

In truth, this was always going to be a potential issue for Leeds when it came to finding a top-class new manager, with the Premier League seen as the holy grail, and dropping down to the second tier an understandable backward step in their career.

For that reason, both Rodgers and Potter have always felt a little pie in the sky, and it could be that someone like Steven Gerrard is the best option, with the Liverpool legend having something to prove after an underwhelming spell at Aston Villa.

Meanwhile, former Leeds Under-21s boss Carlos Corberan could also be a strong choice, with the 40-year-old already thriving in the Championship with West Brom, and possibly seeing a return to Elland Road as an exciting avenue to go down.

Tier 2Rajshahi Division posted their biggest win in first-class cricket by crushing Chittagong Division by an innings and 242 runs at home, in an NCL Tier-2 match that ended within three days. In doing so, they surpassed their previous best, an innings-and-207-run win over Barisal Division in December 2006.After bowling out Chittagong for just 141, Rajshahi declared on 558 for 9. Mizanur Rahman and Jahurul Islam made 144 and 131 respectively, while Junaid Siddique, Hamidul Islam and Muktar Ali struck fifties. Jahurul scored his first first-class hundred in nearly four years. He was also the only Rajshahi player involved in their previous record win, scoring a century in that match as well.In the second innings, Chittagong were shot out for 175 in 56.2 overs. Muktar Ali, Mamun Hossain and Habibur Rahman took three wickets each. Farhad Reza and Saqlain Sajib, who shared seven wickets in the Chittagong first innings, weren’t required to bowl in the second. In the other Tier-2 game, Suhrawadi Shuvo’s second innings seven-for gave Rangpur Division an unlikely 56-run win over the home side Sylhet Division. After winning the toss, Rangpur were bowled out for 217 before Sylhet grabbed a 30-run lead that rode on Zakir Hasan’s third first-class ton.Rangpur were then shot out for 183, leaving Sylhet to get 154 that should have been achieved easily. However, Sylhet were bowled out for 97 in 34 overs, with left-arm spinner Shuvo taking career-best figures of 7 for 45.Tier 1Dhaka Metropolis fought hard on the final day to secure a draw against Barisal Division in Khulna. After electing to bat, Barisal were held together by Sohag Gazi’s seventh first-class hundred. He made 142 and shared a 139-run stand for the fifth wicket with Abu Sayeem, who missed out on his maiden hundred by two runs. Gazi then added 111 runs for the seventh wicket with Monir Hossain, as Barisal finished on 419.
Arafat Sunny and Mohammad Ashraful had taken four wickets each for Dhaka Metro, but their efforts were nullified as Dhaka folded for 245 in their first innings. With the follow-on enforced and five sessions left, Dhaka began solidly and were aided by a rain delay at the start of the final day.
Fifties from Shadman Islam, Asif Ahmed and the captain Marshall Ayub ensured safety before Zabid Hossain and Abu Hider resisted in the final hour to secure a draw after 127 overs in their second innings. The Shaheed Chandu Stadium in Bogra hosted the drawn game between Khulna Division and Dhaka Division. Rain only allowed play for four hours and 18 minutes on the first day, washing away the rest of the game.Khulna were on 172 for 1, with Anamul Haque unbeaten on 84 and Mosaddek Iftekhar 71, when play stopped at 1.48pm on the first afternoon. Both teams picked up three points as a result.

Man Utd Eye Move For "Exceptional" £50m Titan

Manchester United could well be eyeing a summer move for Inter Milan star Andre Onana, albeit with the Red Devils set to face competition for the goalkeeper's signature.

What's the latest on Onana to Man United?

According to the Evening Standard, the Old Trafford outfit could potentially rival Chelsea in the battle to land the 27-year-old ahead of next season, with Erik ten Hag and co able to offer the benefit of providing Champions League football.

The report suggests that the Serie A outfit are set to demand a fee in the region of £50m if they are to part ways with the former Cameroon international over the coming weeks, with the Italian giants potentially set to be forced to cash in due to their ongoing financial woes.

The former Ajax man only made the move to San Siro on a free transfer last summer and still has four years left to run on his existing deal with Simone Inzaghi's side.

Should Man United sign Onana?

There is currently much uncertainty surrounding United's goalkeeping department, with an agreement yet to have been reached with long-serving asset David De Gea over a contract extension, with the Spaniard's current deal set to expire in just a matter of weeks.

Even if the 32-year-old is to sign a new contract in the near future, there have been reports that the £375k-per-week man won't necessarily be the starting option for Ten Hag next season.

The former Atletico Madrid man has arguably become a "big problem" for the Red Devils – according to pundit Jamie Carragher – with his woes in possession having been exposed of late, with club legend Paul Scholes stating following the defeat to Sevilla that De Gea "makes the whole team nervous" when trying to play out from the back.

The signing of Onana, therefore, would be a potential upgrade as far as Ten Hag is concerned, with the 6 foot 3 titan – who played 145 times under the Dutchman in Amsterdam – having been described as "exceptional" on the ball by Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, ahead of last weekend's Champions League final.

Despite ending up on the losing side in that showpiece meeting, the 34-cap ace still "caught the eye" with his distribution, according to Manchester Evening News journalist, Tyrone Marshall.

The Inter man's greater composure on the ball was also shown in Serie A in 2022/23 as he enjoyed an average pass accuracy rate of 79% from his 24 league outings, while De Gea, by contrast, averaged just 68% for that same metric from 38 appearances, having been far more erratic when attempting to play out.

Equally, while the latter man ranks in just the bottom 30% among his European peers for touches per 90, Onana ranks in the top 11% in that regard, again showcasing that he will willingly get involved in the build-up.

As such, with De Gea having become something of a 'problem' of late, the signing of the Cameroonian machine could be just the upgrade that Ten Hag requires.

Dolphins allrounder Andile Phehlukwayo has been ruled out of the rest of the CSA T20 Challenge after suffering a groin injury during the game against Warriors on November 13. He is expected to be out of action for four to six weeks.Bowling the final delivery of his second over in the game, Phehlukwayo was struck by a shot from JJ Smuts. He had taken 2 for 3 in 1.5 overs before the injury. Phehlukwayo left the field immediately and saw a urologist. He underwent surgery on November 15.”As a team we’re obviously very concerned for him and just want him to take good care of his body and get better so that he’s got a chance to come back and fire for us, for South Africa, and continue a great career,” Dolphins coach Grant Morgan said. “We obviously weren’t happy with our performance against the Warriors on Sunday but Andile was one of our stars in that game; he came in and bust the game open while bowling and hit a great six with the bat and he’s a warrior for us.”From a team point of view, we’ve dedicated our game tonight (Wednesday) against the Lions to him and our attitude is for him and he must be happy with what he while watching on television.”Phehlukwayo, 20, had made his international debut in September and played six ODIs against Ireland and Australia.

Arsenal In Talks To Sign ‘Magician’ For Arteta

Arsenal are reportedly growing closure to securing their first signing of the transfer window, as a Premier League ace edges closer to the Emirates.

Mikel Arteta and Edu are expected to have a busy summer, as the Gunners aim to push to further heights after their title-challenging campaign.

What’s the latest on Kai Havertz to Arsenal?

As reported earlier this week by Fabrizio Romano on his Youtube channel, Chelsea star Kai Havertz remains linked to north London.

As stated on the video (03.58), Romano explains that the German “has an agreement with Arsenal on personal terms”, adding that the Londoners “have to be fast” to secure a deal to capture the forward.

On Tuesday, The Athletic’s David Ornstein added that talks are ‘ongoing’ with Chelsea over the 24-year-old, claiming his ‘preference’ is to join Arsenal.

Mail Sport also covered the saga, saying that a new verbal offer of £60m has been made.

What could Kai Havertz offer to Arsenal?

Havertz hasn’t been the only Premier League gem linked with a move to the Emirates, with Declan Rice being another narrative of the club’s transfer window so far.

The West Ham United midfielder like the German has reportedly favoured a move to Arsenal, in two signings that could gel perfectly to take Arteta’s squad to new heights.

Lauded as "magic" by ESPN reporter Jeff Borzello, the versatile attacker thrives in getting himself into positions in the final third, as supported by his average of 8.27 progressive passes received per 90, via FBref.

On the other side, Rice is a master at passing and creative progressive movement from deep midfield, as conveyed by averaging 6.60 progressive passes per 90, placing him in the top 20% of midfielders in Europe to do so, via FBref.

Having the ability to play as a forward or midfielder, Havertz could add a real threat to Arsenal’s attack in abundance, as shown through his form in the Bundesliga where he registered 61 G/A in 118 appearances playing in central midfield for Bayer Leverkusen.

The German’s versatility could equip the north Londoners with added depth in a number of positions, acting as a perfect outlet for the creators in the side.

Declan Rice

West Ham’s captain would thrive playing behind someone as tactically aware as Havertz, who has been praised as a “machine” by talent scout Jacek Kulig for his attacking ability.

As per FBref, Rice averaged 6.31 passes into the final third per 90 on average in the Premier League this season, showing his strengths in picking passes.

Havertz could be the perfect figure to exploit the Englishman’s ability to pass into space, with the Aachen-born gem praised for his movements that see him ‘ghosting into space’, as told by writer Sam Tabuteau via Breaking the Lines.

Arsenal could land the perfect duo to add to Arteta’s attack, in players that boast both experience and along with the talent already on show at the club, it could be an exciting time for the Gunners.

Lynn, McCullum make light work of 174 chase

Chris Lynn and Brendon McCullum lit up the Gabba with entertaining half-centuries that helped Brisbane Heat chase down 174 with 22 balls to spare against Hobart Hurricanes

The Report by Alex Malcolm in Brisbane30-Dec-2016

Fireworks are common place on New Year’s Eve, but 24 hours out from year-end celebrations, Brendon McCullum and Chris Lynn put on a pyrotechnic display at the Gabba to guide Brisbane Heat to their third straight victory.Set 174 to win, McCullum and Lynn made light work of the chase with some extraordinary striking. The duo were brought together at 1 for 9 in the second over and lit up the Gabba. They put on 109 runs in just 53 balls before McCullum holed out.Lynn kept going to finish unbeaten for the second straight match, and struck consecutive sixes to run the total down with 22 balls to spare. The Hurricanes were never in the hunt as 173 was well under par on a superb batting surface. Some excellent bowling from Mark Steketee and Samuel Badree upfront reduced the visitors to 3 for 42, and they lost wickets at regular intervals thereafter.Anything Baz can do, Lynn can do betterFew players can hit the ball cleaner and longer than McCullum, but Lynn did so repeatedly in a partnership that essentially became a six-hitting contest. The pair cleared the ropes 11 times between them, Lynn managed seven compared to McCullum’s four. The former New Zealand captain laid down a marker when he charged down to Stuart Broad and launched him into the second tier, over long-off. Lynn raised the stakes with the biggest hit of the tournament off Shaun Tait, hitting him out of the ground with a strike that was measured at 125 metres. He winked at McCullum moments after it sailed over the Gabba roof. It was longer than Daniel Christian’s six at the same venue last season. Lynn miscued another six two balls later that went 90 metres straight. He also cleared the boundary over cover and wide third man, showing his range and versatility. When your luck’s in, your luck’s inLynn was dropped three times during his amazing 85 not out against Sydney Thunder on Wednesday. He was dropped again third ball of this innings. He launched one to deep midwicket, and D’Arcy Short had to cover a lot of ground to his left. He got his hands to it but couldn’t hang on. He was dropped again on 60, but in reality, Cameron Boyce saved four as the return catch was struck with such force that it could’ve broken his hand. Lynn also skied the ball multiple times only for it to land just wide of fielders and into gaps that could easily have found fieldsmen on another day. McCullum also led a charmed life, but when the ball is struck with such power, it requires some outstanding hands to hang onto the chances.Bailey bogs his batGeorge Bailey was run out under the most unfortunate circumstances at a critical moment in the first innings. The Hurricanes were 3 for 60 after seven overs with Bailey and Christian trying to start a partnership. Christian cut a ball through backward point and the pair appeared to be cruising to an easy three runs. Alex Ross fired a great throw from the deep, but Bailey was going to make his ground comfortably until his bat got stuck in the ground, just short of the crease, as he tried to slide it in. Jimmy Peirson, the Heat wicketkeeper, whipped off the bails while Bailey’s feet were in the air, his bat underneath his body, having bogged in the soft turf just to the side of the pitch. The run-out left the Hurricanes reeling with their three most experienced batsmen back.Sangakkara’s strugglesKumar Sangakkara is a modern great, and his international record in all formats is staggering. But he has not been able to get going in the Big Bash League since joining the Hurricanes last season. His struggles started in his first innings in the competition, last year, when he was out first ball. He made 43 in his second game. But in 10 innings since then, he has failed to reach 20 once. He has scored just 148 runs at an average of 13.45 in 11 appearances for Hobart. He looked in vintage touch early against the Heat, reaching 12 off seven balls with back-to-back boundaries against the offspin of Jason Floros. But his uncharacteristically lean run continued when Badree skidded a shorter ball through and trapped him in front of leg stump.
