Johnson Charles scored a 38-ball 52 to lay the foundation for St Lucia Zouks’ chase of 163, before David Miller finished the job with an unbeaten 33 off 20 to seal a six-wicket victory for the visitors in the Caribbean Premier League opener in Port of Spain. That Zouks were not chasing more was in large part thanks to Shane Watson who combined economy with timely wickets to stifle Trinbago Knight Riders’ innings at crucial junctures. Introduced in the last over of the Powerplay, Watson dismissed Colin Munro off his third ball, before snaring Umar Akmal and Kevon Cooper in the closing overs. Though Darren Bravo’s two sixes off his last two balls somewhat spoiled his figures, he had by then helped to keep Knight Riders down to a total that Zouks ultimately chased down with five balls to spare.Knight Riders got off to an underwhelming start as their power-packed top three – Brendon McCullum, Hashim Amla and Munro – were dismissed for sluggish starts to leave the home side 58 for 3 after nine overs. Darren Bravo then combined with Akmal to consolidate with a stand of 66 off 50. That stand was brought to an end when Akmal mistimed a Watson bouncer to offer an easy caught-and-bowled chance. After Watson closed out a tight 18th over, Darren Bravo went on the attack in the last two, hitting Morne Morkel for a four and a six in the 19th, before hitting consecutive sixes off Watson to close out the innings with a flourish. In pursuit of 163, Charles got Zouks off to a strong start, stroking six fours and a six in his knock of 52. He fell in the 12th over, when a mistimed attempt at a reverse-sweep off Sunil Narine was caught by McCullum. By that stage, though, Zouks had raced to 93 for the loss of two wickets.Narine pulled the game back in the middle overs with a stingy spell of 2 for 25, leaving Zouks with 39 to score off the last four. But Miller then tore into medium pace bowler Ronsford Beaton in the 17th over, with two fours and a six off consecutive deliveries. Zouks ultimately eased past the target with five balls to spare.

Van Niekerk inspires Lightning to Finals Day

Team and individual competition records were broken as Loughborough Lightning sealed their place in the finals of the Kia Super League by beating Surrey Stars.South Africa international Dane van Niekerk hit 91 off just 64 balls, including 13 fours and three sixes, beating the previous competition record innings of 90 not out by Surrey’s Natalie Sciver, as Lightning ran up 168 for 6. That too was a record, the previous highest innings score in the competition being the 164 made by Lancashire Thunder, also at Loughborough University’s Haslegrave ground.”I’ve been struggling with form, but I knew it was a really good track and I had to take my chance,” said van Niekerk, who came into the match having scored just 19 runs in her previous three innings. “Going into the finals it’s nice to have a few runs and for the team to have a bit of momentum.”Surrey skipper Sciver chose to bowl after winning the toss, but may have already regretting her decision when Lightning openers Georgia Elwiss and Van Niekerk brought up the 50 in the seventh over.Van Niekerk looked in good touch from the start. Consecutive boundaries stroked through the off side off the pace bowling of Marizanne Kapp, along with a huge straight six clubbed the left-arm spin of Alex Hartley, were the pick of the 23-year-old’s shots in a half-century made from 41 balls.Hartley, bowling with a nice loop, did pick up a wicket, Elwiss failing to clear long-off, but Van Niekerk appeared unstoppable. A reverse paddle was followed by a reverse scoop for boundaries before Rene Farrell was deposited over midwicket for another six.Sophie Devine edged a catch behind driving at a wide delivery, but just as the first century of the competition seemed Van Niekerk’s for the taking, she pulled Kapp hard to midwicket, where Sciver took a fine catch running in from the boundary.Inevitably, perhaps, van Niekerk then took a wicket in her first over of legspin, the third of the Surrey reply, courtesy of some sharp work behind the stumps by Amy Jones when Bryony Smith dragged her back foot. In her following over she had Cordelia Griffith caught and bowled, but the key wickets as far as Loughborough were concerned were those of Sciver and fellow England international Tammy Beaumont.Sciver had made just 12 when she top-edged Elwiss towards short third man, where Rebecca Grundy took the catch on the edge of the circle. Beaumont was beginning to threaten on 27 when she was run out by a direct hit – by van Niekerk, naturally. In the circumstances it came as no surprise when she added a fine boundary catch to her contribution.”It was a good score but we were never really out of it on that track, so of course we’re disappointed,” Sciver said. “It’s been a great competition, playing under pressure can only help develop our games. The crowds have been great and it shows how popular women’s domestic cricket is becoming. We just wish we were going to Finals Day!”

Leeds Won’t Lose £90k p/w Ace In The Summer

Leeds United have been embroiled in a frustrating league campaign and stare the threat of Premier League relegation in the face heading into the final day, with even a win against Tottenham Hotspur in their last match potentially not being enough to survive.

Jesse Marsch and Javi Gracia have come and gone, leaving it in the hands of veteran boss Sam Allardyce to try and rally his troops for one final push on Sunday.

It is hard to put your finger on where things faltered for the Whites this campaign, though they have conceded the most goals in the English top flight this term, which may explain why the Elland Road outfit is in grave danger of being demoted to the Sky Bet Championship.

In the summer, sorting players' futures out will be a priority in Yorkshire, with uncertainty hanging over many squad assets heading into the off-season.

What's the latest news involving Jack Harrison and how has he fared this term?

One man who looks to set to stay at Elland Road regardless of what division Leeds United find themselves in next year, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Speaking to Football FanCast, Jones said: "Harrison has got a new contract and stuff that he's tied to. They were desperate to keep hold of him and they managed to do it over the course of the last year, so I don't know that there's going to be the same interest in him as we move forward, so I do see a future for him."

Last month, Harrison signed a new £90k-a-week contract at Leeds United that will tie him to the club until the summer of 2028, much to the relief of the Whites' faithful.

As per The Telegraph, Harrison looked all set to join Leicester City in a deal worth £22 million; however, the move collapsed at the last minute, leading to the 26-year-old seeing out this campaign at his current employers.

Jack Harrison of Leeds

In 2022/23, the former Manchester City star has made 39 appearances in all competitions, registering five goals and ten assists, as per Transfermarkt.

Despite this, Harrison has suffered a poor run of form at a dreadful time for Leeds United and has recorded just one assist in his last eight fixtures played.

His dip in performance coincides roughly with the date of his contract extension and WhoScored notes that he hasn't surpassed a match rating of 7/10 since his display against Leicester City, in the tie where he notched his last goal contribution.

Leeds Live journalist Ben Cross was critical of his exploits in Leeds United's 3-1 loss to West Ham United last weekend, giving him a score of 3/10 in the match and writing: "Poor decisions with the ball when it came to him, poor execution when he seemed to make better decisions or simply not involved enough to make decisions at other times."

Despite these poor performances, it would come as a big surprise for the midfielder to stay at Leeds, as the Athletic have reported that he has numerous clubs interested and may even have a lower fee clause in his contract.

Harrison is a talented player and was even labelled as "terrific" by talkSPORT pundit Tony Cascarino via The Boot Room earlier this year. Nevertheless, he needs to up his game on Sunday if Leeds United want to stand any chance of staying in the Premier League.

Morgan yet to commit to Bangladesh tour

Eoin Morgan says he has yet to decide whether he will lead the England one-day side to Bangladesh at the end of this month

Andrew McGlashan02-Sep-2016Eoin Morgan says he has yet to decide whether he will lead the England one-day side to Bangladesh at the end of this month.Morgan was the first of England’s two captains – Alastair Cook being the other – to speak publicly about the trip since it was confirmed it would go ahead, following a security inspection led by the ECB’s head of security Reg Dickason. It has been reported that Morgan is one of the players with the most significant doubts about undertaking the tour. However he claimed, despite being captain, he does not see his decision as being influential on other players who may be wavering.’No issues going’ – Farbrace

Paul Farbrace, England’s assistant coach, has become the first member of the playing or coaching staff to confirm that he is happy to travel to Bangladesh.
Farbrace, who was on the Sri Lanka bus when it was attacked by terrorists in Pakistan in 2009, said that he had been satisfied by the briefing given by the ECB’s head of security, Reg Dickason, last week.
“I heard nothing whatsoever that made me nervous about going to Bangladesh,” Farbrace told the . “We have no reason to doubt Reg Dickason or the board … He is the leading expert after all and I have no issues about going.”

“Absolutely not. It is a completely individual thing,” he said. “The decision any individual makes within the side is the right one and everybody will stand by whoever wants to go or not, and I think that is very important.”I think when so much information is thrown at you within two months of a terrorist attack, you need to digest everything and be settled within yourself so you can go there and concentrate on cricket.”As with other players who have commented on the tour, Morgan said the on-going one-day series against Pakistan has made it difficult to consider the Bangladesh situation. The one-day squad was due to be announced on September 9, two days after the T20 at Old Trafford, but it has now been pushed back into the following week in order to give the players some breathing space after the international season finishes. Morgan indicated that he expected players’ positions – including his own – to be clear within “a couple of days” of the T20.Conversations continue to go on between the players and Dickason, as well as Andrew Strauss, the director of England cricket, who last week said he believed it was “100% safe” for the tour to go ahead following the ECB delegation’s visit and hoped there would not be any absentees.”I would say in a short space of time it is a difficult one, but we have certainly been given the time by the ECB which helps,” Morgan said. “We have not had a great deal of downtime. I think we will take as much time as we need to make a decision and to feel comfortable and to feel safe.”If we’d had time off or no cricket between the meeting and now, I can’t say I would be any closer to the decision, but I would have had more time to digest everything and let everything settle.”If Morgan did withdraw from the tour, England would need a stand-in captain. Jos Buttler, who captained England against Pakistan in the second T20 in the UAE when Morgan was rested, is the vice-captain of the one-day side and could be in line to lead. There is an expectation that some players who appear across all three formats will be rested for the one-day series. Joe Root, who has played 32 international matches since January 1 this year – the second most in the world – would head that list while Moeen Ali and, despite his truncated season, Ben Stokes are also in line for a break. Stokes will be crucial to England’s chances across the seven Tests against Bangladesh and India.

Man Utd Could Land Antony Upgrade In £40m Gem

It has undoubtedly been an impressive season of progress for Manchester United under Erik ten Hag, with the Dutchman having guided his side to Carabao Cup glory and secured Champions League qualification courtesy of a third place finish.

That success – which could well be added to in Saturday's FA Cup final – has come despite the shortcomings of the Red Devils' forward line, with emerging talisman, Marcus Rashford having largely carried the goalscoring burden on his own after bagging 30 goals in all competitions thus far – 17 more than any of his teammates.

The likes of Jadon Sancho and summer signing, Antony have both failed to offer a consistent threat on the flanks, with the pair having netted just seven and eight goals, respectively, across all fronts to date.

Those shortcomings have sparked the search for a new forward addition ahead of next season, with United believed to have identified a whole host of targets to potentially lead the attack in the comings.

As per Manchester Evening News, one such target who is believed to be admired by Ten Hag is Ajax sensation, Mohammed Kudus, with the versatile ace – who previously played under the 53-year-old in Amsterdam – offering the versatility to feature on the flanks or in a central role if required.

Valued at roughtly £40m, according to The Athletic, the Ghanaian starlet looks likely to move on from the Johan Cruyff Arena this summer, with there seemingly more than a small chance that the 22-year-old could reunite with Ten Hag in Manchester.

Should Man United sign Kudus?

While the former Nordsjaelland man could prove a possible solution to United's centre-forward woes, the flexible ace could also prove an upgrade on the current options on the flanks, helping to offer strong competition to the aforementioned Antony on the right wing.

Antony for Man United

A fellow left-footer like his former teammate, Kudus has caught the attention following a standout season in the Netherlands despite Ajax's collectives woes, having scored 18 goals and provided six assists in 42 games in all competitions.

That includes a tally of six goal involvements in just six Champions League appearances, with the 5 foot 9 speedster proving himself capable of making the difference at the highest level.

While Man United's Brazilian trickster also contributed six goal involvements in seven Champions League outings for Ajax in 2021/22, Dutch legend Marco van Basten has previously stated that Kudus is "much better than Antony", with the 23-cap international said to be "smarter and more technical" than his ex-colleague.

Also hailed as "more fun to watch" by Van Basten, it is Kudus who appears to have the greater knack for beating opponents with ease having averaged 4.57 successful take-ons per 90 across the last 365 days, as per FBref, while Antony has averaged just 1.63 in that time.

Of course, Kudus could well follow in the latter man's footsteps and also endure a difficult transition to life in England, although the claims of Van Basten – as well as his statistical brilliance – would seem to suggest that the Ghana star can be an upgrade on the £200k-per-week enigma.

Arsenal Could Sign Cazorla 2.0 In £35m Star

Arsenal have been linked with one of Eredivise’s best midfielders ahead of the transfer window, as Mikel Arteta looks forward to a busy summer.

The Gunners must improve the depth of their squad in the window, after narrowly missing out on the Premier League title to Manchester City, the north Londoners will hope to challenge again next campaign.

Arteta could start his summer dealings by signing one of the most talked about midfielders in Europe to bolster his side.

What’s the latest on Orkun Kokcu to Arsenal?

As reported by Portuguese outlet Record (via The Daily Express), Feyenoord midfielder Orkun Kokcu is wanted by Arsenal this summer.

The report comes from the point of view of Benfica, who wish to sign the £35m ace before Arsenal get there first, with the Gunners claimed to ‘still hold the advantage’ over the Portuguese giants.

The Primeira Liga champions may struggle to pay the asking fee for the 22-year-old, which is where the Londoners could capitalise.

What could Orkun Kokcu bring to Arsenal?

Hailed as being a “true leader” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Kokcu could be a huge influence on Arsenal’s midfield.

The Turkey international has contributed to ten goals this campaign, scoring eight himself and assisting two in 32 Eredivisie appearances in Feyenoord’s title-winning year.

While his numbers in the final third are impressive for a central midfielder, the progressive nature of the youngster’s play is one of his greatest exploits, making him a great fit for Arteta’s style.

As per FBref, the Haarlem-born midfielder averages a monstrous 12.65 progressive passes per 90, as well as attempting 83.79 passes per 90, displaying his ability and desire to get on the ball and dispatch to advancing areas.

With such numbers, there’s little surprise that the Feyenoord ace has been likened to former Arsenal magician Santi Cazorla.

Daily Mail journalist Oliver Godden described Kokcu in 2020 as being ‘best’ compared to the Spaniard due to his ability to ‘cut sides open with key passes’, when playing in deep midfield.

Arsenal's ex player SantiCazorla

Indeed, the reporter stated at the time: "Kokcu is not dissimilar from the man whose shoes he will likely be filling in Ozil, but the best comparison is to former Gunner Santi Cazorla."

Arteta could have his own answer to the legendary midfielder, whom he once praised as having “unbelievable quality”, which is supported by the numbers of the two when the Spaniard was in his prime.

As per WhoScored, in his first season at the Emirates the Llanera-born gem averaged 2.6 key passes per game, which to put into comparison is slightly less than the level Kokcu is operating at this term with an average of 2.8 per game.

For a slim price of £35m in today’s market, Arteta could equip his offensively sublime side with added quality in a player that holds the ‘ability’ to play in the Premier League as claimed by his former boss and Manchester United legend Jaap Stam.

With Benfica hunting the rising star, Arsenal must act fast should they wish to seal the signature of Kokcu, who could be integral to the clubs’ progression in both the league and Champions League next campaign.

Karunaratne, meanwhile, is coming off an underwhelming Test series: he had managed only 41 runs, including five single-digit scores, at 6.83 in six innings against Australia. Strong performances for the A team could help the two batsmen bolster their prospects at the senior level.Left-arm wristspinner Lakshan Sandakan, who took match figures of 7 for 107 in the first Test against Australia in Pellekele, the best by a chinaman bowler on Test debut, was another prominent name in the A squad. Sandakan’s match returns were also the third-best by a Sri Lanka bowler on debut.Batsman Avishka Fernando and seamer Lahiru Kumara, who recently broke into the ODI squad, and Under-19 captain Charith Asalanka, who led them to a whitewash against England Under-19 last month, were also named in the squad.
