Liverpool Closing In On Exciting Announcement

Liverpool's prospective new sporting director Jorg Schmadtke could provide a 'fresh approach' to recruitment at Anfield, according to journalist Dean Jones.

What's the latest news involving Jorg Schmadtke?

As per The Guardian, Liverpool are in talks to appoint Schmadtke as their new sporting director to replace outgoing figure Julian Ward, who will leave in the summer following a brief stint in the role.

The report states that the 59-year-old left Wolfsburg back in February and has occupied similar positions at Hannover and Cologne; however, has yet to venture abroad in his recruitment career.

Jurgen Klopp has recently commented on Liverpool's search for a new sporting director, as per BBC Sport, stating: "Pretty much everyone has a sporting director because it makes sense.

Sport BILD journalist Christian Falk has heard different information to the widely discussed rumours that Schmadtke is in dialogue over the possibility of becoming sporting director, stating on Twitter: "According to our information, Jörg Schmadtke is actually in talks with Liverpool first about a post as "external consultant for transfers" for temporary support".

Speaking to Football FanCast, journalist Jones believes that Schmadtke would provide a 'fresh approach' to potential incomings at Liverpool if he was to be brought to Anfield in any capacity.

Jones told FFC: "I think it's actually quite refreshing to hear something like this is in the works and it might put a bit more of a fresh approach to the market and might provide a new spark to the conversations that they end up having among the transfer committee."

Who could Liverpool sign in the summer to rebuild their squad?

Liverpool have been linked with several players this summer as they look to strengthen, with midfield said to be a particular area of interest for German coach Klopp.

It has already been confirmed that long-term target Jude Bellingham won't be heading to Anfield in the off-season; nevertheless, Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount, Bayern Munich anchorman Ryan Gravenberch and Brighton & Hove Albion ace Alexis Mac Allister are all reported to be on Liverpool's wishlist.

Portuguese outlet O'Jogo have also claimed that Sporting Lisbon man Manuel Ugarte is someone who has attracted interest from the red half of Merseyside, though Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur are also mooted to be keen on securing his signature.

Roberto Firmino, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will all leave Anfield on free transfers come the end of this term, indicating that Klopp's rebuild is already well underway as he looks to freshen up his squad ahead of 2023/24.

Newcastle Eyeing Summer Move For £93k-A-Week Attacker

Newcastle United are reportedly one of a number of Premier League clubs interested in signing Roma striker Tammy Abraham in the summer transfer window.

Is Abraham leaving Roma?

The £93,000-a-week Englishman has enjoyed two productive years in Italy, kicking on after struggling to be a key man at Chelsea, eventually leaving them in 2021. Abraham has led the line impressively for the Giallorossi, scoring 36 goals in 101 appearances, although his first season was the more productive of the two, with only eight Serie A goals coming his way this term.

For that reason, it could be that Roma boss Jose Mourinho is happy to part ways with the 25-year-old at the end of the campaign, with his current deal in Italy expiring in the summer of 2026. Newcastle will be looking at attacking reinforcements ahead of the upcoming transfer window and Abraham is one player who has been linked with a move to St James' Park in the recent past.

It does look as though a return to the Premier League could be on the cards for the England international, with a fresh update claiming that the Magpies are still very much in the conversation.

Roma striker Tammy Abraham.

Could Newcastle complete Abraham signing?

According to a report from Spain, Newcastle are one of six English teams eyeing up a move for Abraham at the end of the season. The other clubs in question are Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, Liverpool and Aston Villa, highlighting just how much competition there is for is signature.

It is stated, as mentioned, that the striker could jump at the chance to go back to the Premier League, perhaps feeling that he has done his stint in Italy now.

Abraham could be a really shrewd signing by Newcastle this summer, although much will depend on whether Callum Wilson stays put or not, with his current Magpies contract expiring in 2024. Should he move on, the Roma man could be a great younger replacement for him, battling with Alexander Isak for minutes and providing squad depth ahead of what could be a busy 2023/24 campaign across four competitions.

The former Chelsea attacker is maturing all the time as a player, already looking like a more formidable footballer than the one who left Stamford Bridge two years ago, and he has been hailed as "outstanding" by journalist Henry Winter in the past, following a strong performance against Leicester City in the UEFA Europa Conference League semi-finals last season.

'I'd like to work behind the scenes' – Kumble

Anil Kumble, India’s new head coach, has acknowledged the influence of his predecessors John Wright and Gary Kirsten, and expects to adopt their low-visibility style and remain mostly behind the scenes

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Jun-20161:30

Anil Kumble’s journey from player to coach

Anil Kumble, India’s new head coach, has acknowledged the influence of his predecessors John Wright and Gary Kirsten, and expects to adopt their low-visibility style and remain mostly behind the scenes. Wright was India’s head coach from 2000 to 2005, and was head coach at Mumbai Indians in 2013-14, when Kumble served as the team’s mentor. Kirsten was India’s head coach from 2008 – Kumble’s last year as a Test cricketer – to 2011.”I played a lot under John Wright, he’s been a great influence on how I’ll go about [the role], in terms of being in the background,” Kumble told . “When I became a mentor for Mumbai Indians, I brought John in because he understood a lot about Indian culture and then the way coaches work. So I’ll pick his brain.”I was involved with Gary Kirsten only for the Test matches, a very short period. He was, again, someone who worked in the background and didn’t make himself visible. Exactly how I’d like to work as well. Not in the front, but behind the scenes.”As a bowler, Kumble combined a cerebral approach with a willingness to keep pounding in for long spells no matter what the match situation. Accordingly, he said his coaching style would have “a bit of everything”, giving data its due while trying to strengthen his players’ response to adversity.”Data is important when you have to devise strategies and man-management is extremely crucial,” he said. “You need the team environment to be consistent and healthy, but also competitive. That is something I would look to have in the team.”The team comes first, the coaches play the background role, you are just trying to prepare the team for the best of their ability, for all conditions and all eventualities. You can’t really plan for adversity, but to try to prepare the team to handle those adversities. That’s exactly what we’ll try and address.”Kumble said he wanted to “build leaders” in his playing group, and said his coaching would have to deal as much with off-field as with on-field issues.”[It is] important as a coach to take the burden off the captain,” he said. “Captain has a lot of things on his head, all cricketing decisions and non-cricketing as well. When I was captain I realised that it’s not just taking decisions on the field but off it as well. Those are quite stressful.”Having been with the Indian team for such a long time and having had various experiences of not just conditions, but outside the cricket field, when you’re a coach, you’re not just coach on the field but also off it. You’re trying to build personalities, trying to build leaders. That’s how I’d like to look at this team. There is some wonderful talent, you need to make leaders out of them, try and understand what ticks them. It’s not a quick fix, you have to understand and then take a call.”Defining his role as that of an “enabler”, Kumble said he would not impose his views on the players.”They are already playing a good brand of cricket,” he said. “I will bring my characteristics as well but won’t impose on them. My job is to convince players to buy into what I believe in and what they believe in. At the end of it, they need to own it. If the team doesn’t own what we agree on, then it’s not going to work. I’m only an enabler. I work as an enabler to make sure things happen.”You need to be tough to play international cricket. It’s not only highs that you will see, you will also see lows. The coach’s role is not only to be a coach during successful periods but to be a coach during tough times.”Kumble said he had already spoken to India’s Test captain Virat Kohli, and looked forward to starting his tenure with a camp in Bangalore, his hometown, ahead of the four-Test tour of West Indies in July-August.”We have the West Indies Test series coming up, so that’s something our focus will be on,” he said. “I’ve spoken to Virat [Kohli] and MS [Dhoni, India’s ODI and T20 captain] must be on the flight back from Zimbabwe. It’s nice to have a camp here in Bengaluru before we tour. We’ll sit down and iron out and get ready for the West Indies tour.”Bowling, getting 20 wickets in Test cricket will win you matches. That’s the focus and we’ll take it from there. Batting, we have some great talent there. I believe this team has the potential. It’s a young team and driven by young leaders. Looking forward to working with Virat and MS. Long-term, we have lots of Tests coming up in India, that’ll be our focus.”Kumble starts his role on a one-year term, and most of India’s Test cricket in that period will be at home. Despite this, Kumble said he would focus on improving their overseas record, and that the process could begin at home itself.”I’m really excited,” he said. “This [overseas record] is something I wanted to commit to. You’ll have lot of time to strategise. The team needs to be really fit to meet the demands of Test cricket. Lot of Tests coming up, the first four are in West Indies where the conditions are not that different to India. But the Indian conditions are where we are comfortable with. Focus will be on our overseas record and the mindset we have to address from home itself. We’ll sit down and make a plan to ensure that we train towards achieving those goals.”Returning to a constantly on-the-road lifestyle was the one major concern Kumble had before he applied for the job; he said he finally decided to go ahead after a “long chat” with his family.”I felt it was the right time for me to get involved. I’m still fit enough to run around. It’s a young team so I believe you have to get your hands dirty, you need to be with the players, train with them, be amongst them. If it was a senior team, you can sit back, strategise and address that. But as a young team, you need to be in the middle and that’s something I can do at this stage.”I had a long chat with the family, 18 years on the road, they’ve taken the stress and the burden. My wife and kids have been really supportive. Not easy travelling again so that was a major decision. Once those two were clear, I put my hat in the ring. The process was great, I felt more comfortable because the three members who were interviewing me were my own team-mates, former colleagues. Process was professional and I enjoyed being a part of it. The presentation that was requested, I made my plan and put a blueprint, a blueprint for others to contribute and make it larger and ensure that all stakeholders own that plan and continue to take Indian cricket forward.”

Worrying Spurs Manager News Emerges

Journalist Paul Brown is sceptical over whether Julian Nagelsmann would take the managerial vacancy at Tottenham Hotspur in light of potential alternative job opportunities emerging in the summer.

What's the latest news involving Julian Nagelsmann?

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has issued an update on the future of Julian Nagelsmann on the Here We Go podcast, stating: “Tottenham have Julian Nagelsmann as one of their priorities, he’s one of their top targets in terms of a new manager. Before reaching an agreement he wants some guarantee on a new director. They don’t have a Director of Football, and he wants to know if Tottenham will go in that direction to have a new Director of Football or not.”

The Daily Mail claim that Brentford technical director Lee Dykes has been earmarked to replace Fabio Paratici at Spurs, while Johannes Spors has also been linked with the sporting director vacancy.

As per The Telegraph, it could cost Spurs over £10 million in compensation costs to hire Nagelsmann as manager, as he is on gardening leave from Bayern Munich, meaning he is still technically employed by the German giants.

Intriguingly, The Mirror have recently claimed that Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso is also a serious contender for the Tottenham vacancy, with chairman Daniel Levy understood to be willing to clear any compensation to hire the 41-year-old, potentially providing an alternative to Nagelsmann.

Speaking to Football FanCast, journalist Brown is unsure why Nagelsmann would take the reins at Tottenham, given the likelihood of other high-profile jobs becoming available in the off-season.

Brown told FFC: "I think Spurs would love to have a coach like Nagelsmann going there, but if you're Julian Nagelsmann, why would you take that job right now? There is no point; you wait a few weeks until the summer; some of the genuinely big clubs around Europe, some of the real giants, might have jobs available. If you're Nagelsmann, you'd certainly be interested in taking those over Spurs. That's not to say he's going to say no."

What next for Tottenham Hotspur?

Tottenham's manager situation has dominated headlines in recent times, making it easy to forget that the Lilywhites actually still have three Premier League matches left to play this term, which will go a long way to deciding what situation their boss will arrive into come the summer.

Spurs sit sixth place in the Premier League table on 57 points, six behind Manchester United, who are on 63 and have played one match less than their divisional rivals.

Tottenham Hotspur interim manager Ryan Mason talks to Pedro Porro

With that in mind, it makes finishing in the top four a near-impossible task for Tottenham. Nevertheless, their remaining fixtures against Aston Villa, Brentford and Leeds United could still pave the way for qualification to compete in either the Europa League or Europa Conference League next season.

Caretaker boss Ryan Mason will be intent on rallying his troops to finish 2022/23 in a strong fashion following a year of turbulence on and off the field.

Willis lays out ambition to aid Sri Lanka's next generation

Sri Lanka’s new high performance manager Simon Willis, has said he aims to bridge the gap in standards between Sri Lanka’s domestic system and the international game.

Sri Lanka’s new high performance manager Simon Willis, has said he aims to bridge the gap in standards between Sri Lanka’s domestic system and the international game.High-profile players and some administrators have repeatedly drawn attention to the ailing health of Sri Lanka’s first-class system. Though an overhaul of the Premier League tournaments is beyond Willis’ purview, he has outlined a vision to create a well-defined “player pathway” from grassroots cricket to the international level, and to create more cohesion within the system.”We’ve got to work together so that when players get picked, it doesn’t get two or three years to get established in international level,” Willis said. “We have to ensure that everything we do underneath – whether that’s A team, Under-23 or Under-19 – is preparing them for transition to an international environment.”That might not be just cricket skills. It might be travelling overseas. People might struggle being away from home for a long period of time. We need to prepare them for that. It might be playing in different conditions – like what we’ve seen in England with a swinging ball.”Sri Lanka have struggled in all formats over the past 18 months, making little impact in major limited-overs tournaments, and having lost 10 of their 14 Tests since December 2014. Much of that has been put down to difficulty in replacing retiring stars.”The first thing is to provide an oversupply,” Willis said. “We need more players than just one or two. We need to create competition. We want players banging down the door to get into international teams – both men and women.”But they should be capable of winning matches on consistent basis. Not just once a week or in two or three years. We see two of the greats who recently finished their careers – Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene – they were capable of winning matches in all formats, consistently. That’s the challenge we’ve got in our player pathway.”Willis said he would also aim to link Sri Lanka’s national team management more effectively with the domestic system. A breakdown in the relationship between the board, selectors and the team had led to the overnight sacking of a selection committee in March, on the eve of the team’s departure for the World T20.”From my understanding, there’s been a small disconnect between the national team and what’s going on underneath,” Willis said. “I see myself as the glue that links those things two together.”Graham Ford – the head coach of the national team – will tell us his needs, as well as Angelo Mathews, who is the present captain. Us as a team will be trying to identify players and develop them in certain ways and provide them with opportunity overseas or in this country, to develop international players that the national team requires.”Willis – who has a Level 3 certificate for coach education – has also been hired to up-skill Sri Lanka’s coaches. He said he hoped to work with local coaches to put in place a central database containing in-depth information on key players, and he also spoke about tapping into knowledge already contained in the system.”For me, it’s really important all Sri Lankan coaches are seen on the grounds. Whether that’ll be a provincial game or in a club game, we need to be out there watching players and communicating with coaches further down the chain. This is a part in the education process. It’s a two-way process. Not just top-down, we need to learn from those people who are specialising down the grass root level, because we can learn lessons along the way.”

Tottenham: Levy Hand Picks New Top Choice For Spurs Job

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has personally identified Eintracht Frankfurt boss Oliver Glasner as his new "first choice", according to reports.

What's the latest Spurs manager news?

Spurs have it all to do before a crucial summer transfer window, with the club still searching for both a permanent manager and Fabio Paratici's replacement.

The latter club director was forced to resign from his role after losing an appeal against a 30-month worldwide ban from football activities, leaving Tottenham without a head transfer chief.

The Premier League side are also still without a successor to former first team coach Antonio Conte, who departed N17 nearly two months ago, but there are a fair few names who could come in.

Xabi Alonso and Julian Nagelsmann are both out of the running though, with the former confirming his plans to stay at Leverkusen on Wednesday.

However, the likes of Sporting CP's Ruben Amorim, Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi and Feyenoord boss Arne Slot are still in contention for the Spurs job.

Glasner, who is confirmed to be leaving Eintracht at the end of this campaign, is also attracting Tottenham's interest – with a report by Football Transfers making an interesting claim.

oliver-glasner-tottenham-hotspur-manager-antonio-conte

According to their information, Spurs chief Levy has personally identified the Austrian as his new "first choice" managerial target. Tottenham's boardroom member is apparently already in contact with Glasner, too, with Levy "understood to be talking" to him.

It's added talks "haven't developed" as much yet, but it's clear that the former Wolfsburg boss is a real contender.

The report also claims Levy appreciates interim boss Ryan Mason, while the Spurs board are believed to favour a coach with English top flight experience.

Burnley boss Vincent Kompany was in contention to manage Spurs, but the Belgian's new contract at Turf Moor means a move has stalled for now.

Who is Oliver Glasner?

The 48-year-old has many credentials and his soon-to-be status as a free agent is surely a massive draw for Levy.

Glasner boasts a Europa League crown on his CV, having guided Eintracht to glory in the final last season, at the expense of Scottish heavyweights Rangers.

He has also been praised for his "intense" and "aggressive" style of play, with counterpart Marco Rose saying this to the media on Glasner back in 2021:

"Oliver Glasner's intense and aggressive football has brought big success to Frankfurt. They have solutions in and out of possession."
